How long did it take your child to learn to swim.

My child's been going six months to swimming lessons. She's in level one still and is starting to kick and swim with a woggle float. She's still not hugely water confident but has started getting her face a little wet and taking part much better in the lessons. Just wondering how long it took yours. Thank you

DS (5yrs old) started swimming lessons last Feb. Before that he was confident in the water, but would sink like a stone without armbands.

He's now been in stage 2 for about a month and can swim without armbands. Confidently on his back, less so on his front.

Still very much needs to be supervised though.

It depends how old they are, if they do any swimming outside of lessons, the quality of the teaching etc etc. Its very much like how long is a piece of string. I took DS1 to toddler swimming lessons with parents in the pool aged 3. After about 3 months he could swim 5 metres no real technique but he could make it. DS2 for a number of reasons never got the same start in swimming as DS1 by age 7 he would hyperventilate if he had to let go of the side. 2 terms of 1 to 1 lessons he could swim over 50 metres in all 4 strokes with such good technique he got scouted for the local competitive swim team.

I’ve been taking my daughter for almost 6 months and all she does is float around looking bemused...but she is only 7months old 😂 I imagine a 5 year old would have made significantly more progress in this time. That said, I’m hoping all this swimming while young will mean she is confident so it is easier when she starts ‘proper’ swimming when shes older? Really depends on their age when they start and how confident they are I guess.
