Anyone else have a really long baby? Any need to worry?

So, I have a long baby. At birth she was 56cm (length of average 1.5m old), 7 weeks she was 64cm (length of average 5m old), 4 months she was 68cm (length of average 7.5m old) and today a week off being 5m she is 70cm (length of average 9m old).

I know averages are not the most reliable, but she is loooong! We struggle to find clothes to fit her so she's been in 6-9m for about 4-5 weeks and was in 3-6m at 9 weeks. I'm only 5'4 and her dad's only 5'7, I know her being long doesn't necessarily mean she will be tall, but does anyone else have experience of long babies and is there any point I should start to worry about how much she is growing?

I'd be worried if she wasn't growing. I can't see why it'd be a worry that she is growing.

My DS is 24 weeks. We measured him about 4 weeks ago for a car seat and he was 75cm. He weighs 24lb and has been in 6-9 month clothes for 6 weeks and is heading into 9-12 month clothes now but we're not worried. He's just a big baby.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about ❤️

Glad to hear you're in the same boat. She only weighs 15lb 3oz so she's long and lean Grin so her clothes are baggy on her but never long enough!

My dd now 13 was long and thin from birth all through primary she was the tallest in her class. But now boys have caught up and some girls too so she is average.
I found it useful to buy adjustable waist trousers and skirts because I had to go up a size to get the right length.

Two of mine were 22” which is 55:88 and both are tall DS2 is 6’ and DD is 5’8”. DS2 was always a big baby which we found strange as DS1 was 19” and lost a lot of weight at birth and was only 14 lbs at one year old.

Our DD1 was very long as a baby. We couldn't really put her in sleepsuits with integral feet as she couldn't stretch her legs right out and they squished her toes. So she had rompers and socks. Now that she's older she is one of the tallest in her year at school, but that isn't an issue.

It's worth noting that length isn't measured all that much as it tends to be quite inaccurate. One of my friend's DDs "shrank" 4 cm in 2 weeks because the measurements were so inaccurate.

My DD gets her height from DH. If you are concerned that your DD's length doesn't make sense given your heights then you could mention it to your health visitor.

I made a medical journal at birth for my record breaking length but I’m only 5ft7 as an adult. I wouldn’t be worried unless the HV or GP is.

One of my sons was 60cm at birth, I can’t remember being worried about it at all. He is now a 6’ 3’’ adult so not an abnormal height.

No don't worry - both my babies were long. Ds was lean with it and had an ENORMOUS head but he's 13 now and tbh if anything he's shorter than his friends and I'm expecting a big growth spurt. Dd is 9 and is still tall for age . Both healthy.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/11/2019 01:43

I had a long baby. Tallest in her class the entire way to 8 years old. And one of the youngest. But I don't expect it will last. Her dad is 6' 1" and I'm 5' 6".

My DD was really long. I had to cut the feet out of her baby grows. She's now stopped growing and is 5'10" slim, tall and Gorgeous.

DS was very long at birth. 56 cm I think. They kept measuring to make sure they weren’t wrong! He’s always been tall, never less than 91st centile for height. As a navy, I used to cut the feet off his sleep suits. As a child I buy him “slim” trousers in a much older age to get them long/narrow enough. He’s 11 now and 152 cm.

DD was much more average size at birth, not remarkable in any way, but is literally head and shoulders amongst her class mates at 137 cm age just 8.
