Bedtime for 9 week old

Hi all
We have a 9 week old and a 4.5 year old.

I am ebf, and very much still being led by baby. We dont have a routine as such, but am starting to notice a few patterns.

What confuses me is what people are doing about bedtime. I see alot of posts from people saying that bedtime for their little ones of this sort of age is somewhere between 6.30 and 8.30. However, as its recommended that baby sleeps in same room as you for 1st 6 months, how are people doing this? Our 4 year old goes to bed around 7, and baby is quite often having a nap around this time, however she doesnt officially 'go to bed' until we take her up with us, normally somewhere around 10.30!

This is probably a silly question, especially as I have done all this before (although really cant remember what we did first time round although think it was the same), but how do others do bedtime for ones this age?

Should add that from around 8.30 we do dim lights, turn tv on low etc.

Thank u.

DS stayed in the room with us, either in the pram/ carry cot, and then later in the playpen.

I bf both of mine and bedtime was last feed before I went to bed so about 10/11 in the (vain) hope I would get 4 hours sleep before next feed.
My advice is do what suits you and baby. A formal bedtime at 9 weeks and especially if
bf is not really necessary. I assume ebf means express bf but it's still breast milk so baby may need feeding more often as it's digested more quickly than formula.

Sorry just realised it's exclusive bf, my children are adults.

Yes definitely be led by baby and your own preferences.

When DD was a newborn we just let her fall asleep downstairs with us and then I'd take her upstairs with me when I went to bed. I think she was probably 3-4 months old before we introduced a proper bedtime.

At 9 weeks we were still sleeping in shifts in the living room - baby was a total nightmare 🤣
By about 3 months we just put our DS upstairs in his crib in our room at 6.30 and went back downstairs with the monitor.

Our babies stayed with us until we went to bed!!

They start showing a need for bedtime around 6 months onwards. Be led by them and what works best for you

Hi OP.

Our DD is also 9 weeks.

We come to bed at 8:30-9pm. Main lights off, tv on the ipad, lights dimmed. Nappy change (if due) and feed. She can still be awake by 11/12. Then hopefully gives me a good stretch before the next feed.

At that age my DS would fall asleep for the night in his carry cot. We'd have dinner, watch TV, etc with him in the room. Then we'd take him upstairs to bed with us and once we were ready to turn the lights out we'd transfer him into the bedside crib.

At that age we would let baby sleep downstairs and just take her upstairs when we would go. They barely have a routine at that age. Dont worry Smile

Thank you all. Good to know most people are doing similar at this age. I was just worried I was missing a trick somewhere.

@Waffle12 if it helps.. we didn't instil an official bed time routine until DD was 3 months old and that's only because we had a weekend away planned Smile

Sparrowlegs248 · 07/11/2019 14:56

Both of mine stayed downstairs til I went to bed until 5 or 6 months. Ds1 slept on me. Ds2 slept anywhere (usually sleepyhead on floor).
