Move from cot bed to single or small double

Hi,

I have an almost 4 year old who still fits in (but won’t sleep through the night in...) a cot bed which has had the sides removed. I’ve decided to move him into a new bed in the hope that it will be a bit bigger/comfier and he will stay in it overnight! Went to look at single beds today and they seem to not be much bigger than his cot bed. Now thinking about a small double/queen sized. Has anyone done this? Did it work it was it too big for them? He currently starts the night in his bed then comes into us and me and my husband take it in turns in the spare room.

I have mine in a double- no falling out of it and room for me to snuggle in when they're not well. I love it.

After being in a cot bed with sides removed I moved ds into a small double. He loves it.

The bigger the better. They can roll around and you can join them if needed without killing your back

As an adult I’ve had jobs where I’ve had to sleep in a small single (aka a cot bed) and on a couple of occasions I’ve had to share that! I’m struggling to imagine a four year old who wouldn’t fit in a standard single.

GemmeFatale he will of course fit. It’s just I was thinking of gibing him a bit more room

My 4 year old is really tall and has plenty of space in his single. I could lie in it with him if I wanted to (I never do though). His room isn’t big enough for a double bed so no choice there for us.

However pick which bed works best for your family. If you think you’ll be getting in it with him then get a double. Or if you want to use it for guests too.

My 3 year old is in a double and sleeps great, means we can get in for cuddles and stories. And my 2 year old is just about to go into a king, only because we are sizing up and the frame/mattress is under a year old.

It seems odd to me to give a 4 year old that much space to sleep. A single bed is more than enough. And a bigger bed is not going to cure him of getting into bed with you in the night.

Won’t he have more floor space for playing if you just give him a standard single bed?

DS has never been in a cot bed. We moved him from the cot to bedsharing in a floor bed (single) and now he's just in the single bed with a small roll although he hasn't fallen out for ages (2.4). There is room for me as well unless he's ill enough to want to lie his head on my stomach and lie sidewards. Yes I'm apparently a hippy dippy mother but it works for us
