Hi looking some advice. My 6mo son refuses to take anything of a spoon. He just will not entertain it at all. Any tips ideas what I could do?? I started a week or 2 before he turned 6 mo but he refused so I left it. Hes now over 6mo and still refusing to open mouth. TIA

Give some finger foods?

mindutopia · 21/10/2019 12:17

I would just give him some food to play with. I did baby led weaning with both of mine, but no way they would have taken food off a spoon - I tried a few times just to help them and nursery tried (before they understood that they were never spoon fed). Finger foods are easiest for them to grip and explore and feed themselves, but you can still offer 'mushy' things like porridge, puree, yogurt on the tray and let him stick his hands in and lick it off his fingers.

Stop trying to feed him with a spoon. Give him finger food. Bits and pieces off your own plate whilst you sit and eat with him.

BLW (finger foods) or wait a few more weeks and try again, maybe he just wasn’t ready.

He doesn't HAVE to eat yet...

I too despaired at this age as my DD wasn't ready at all. Then I stopped giving myself a hard time and remembered that at this age food is just for playing and tasting! Just keep giving finger foods and trying with small bits of purées. She didn't really get on board with it all until she was about 7 months and at 8 months she started to chew and swallow finger foods.

She's 9 months old now and a right little foodie! She loves blueberries the most, closely followed by peanut butter on toast. We went to Wagamama's on the weekend and she scoffed her way thorough a kids meal. Just give it time.

Try a toasted heel of bread, some cucumber sticks, baby corn, some big bits of cooked broccoli. Pop them in front of him and he might pick them up and put them to his mouth and have a try. They’re all different.

PopeHalloweerious · 21/10/2019 12:27

Try strips of bread/pitta/ cucumber as "spoons" for dipping into mushy food as well. Mine wouldn't take a spoon either, he eats nearly everything now

CalamityJune · 21/10/2019 12:30

Just back off and let him explore finger foods. It's not important at this age.

There's no rush ; I have 3 DC who all got there at different rates . DC1 wasn't interested in food until they were 10 months old . DC2 was completely self feeding at 6 months using bread to dip if it was a mushy meal and DC3 was happy to eat as long as they were being fed and didn't have to make any effort themselves. All ended up eating almost everything .if your baby were mine I would plonk a bit of my food in front of them while I was eating but if they weren't showing any interest I wouldn't bother doing anything special for them.

Thank you everyone. Tried finger food still no interest. Will just keep trying until hes interested. Didnt have any issues weaning daughter last year, but I guess they are all different
