Nightmare tooth brushing

Please, any tips please!!
Baby is 9 months old. 4 teeth. I need to brush them and he hates it with a passion. His 2 bottom teeth get food all stuck between and I want to get into good habits and brush them, not just let him chew a toothbrush himself (he doesn't get his teeth when he does this, puts it near the back of his mouth)
Iv tried all the tricks in the book. Watching my 3 year old, pretending to do a teddy teeth, singing, watching tv, holding something, and eventually just holding his arms and doing it. This results in screaming, thrashing and choking where he is crying so much.
Using a baby toothbrush, with either mint or apple mint toothpaste. Today he thrashed so much his little gums bled 😭 please any suggestions. This twice a day is so hard

No advice but following with sympathy as DD is the same. Nearly 2 and she screams that much she chokes.

She used to be fine so I don't know what's happening. Hopefully it's just because she's teething

I use to wrap mine in a towel so they can’t get out but I’m not then having to use my arms to hold hands etc out the way. I’d lie them down with my knees on the bit of towel left so they couldn’t escape. I’d then open their mouth and brush.

Sounds worse than it is. I found because they couldn’t wiggle the didn’t hurt themselves.

God I'm watching this for tips!

I think there are special wipes you can get which may work better?

To be honest I need some tips on this too as we mostly just let DD do it herself. Now she is 15 months she’s come round to it a bit more and now quite likes doing it- she’ll even let me help a bit.

Have you brushed yours at the same time? Tried to make a game out of it?

I’d definitely avoid holding him down as it will make it a ‘thing’. If you try to make it as positive as possible I’m sure he’ll come round!

Two toothbrushes. One for him to chew on, one for you to brush. I also found an electronic baby toothbrush much easier.

We used the baby finger brushes up until she was about 2/2.5 yrs. Hey duggee toothbrushing song on ceebeebies helped too.

Brushbaby brushes.

I have an electric toothbrush. When baby is on the bath I let her watch me fully brush my teeth. Then I take her regular baby toothbrush hold it as an extension of mine and then turn mine on so mine is buzzing and then brush her teeth 'with mummy's toothbrush'
So far she loves it.... she gets to grab onto my buzzing one whilst I sneakily do hers!

Havnt tried holding a toothbrush. I let him hold something he normally isnt allowed like my phone and he gets super excited but the second the brush is in his mouth he goes crazy.
Will look for a finger brush, that's a good idea.

Brush baby electric toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste! And letting him do it after I have brushed for a bit as a reward. Some days are fine. Some are horrific still 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ohnoherewego62 · 10/10/2019 22:18

I put a youtube video on for my phone. One of her favourite songs and she holds phone and watches it and I brush teeth.

WhenCanISleepAgain · 10/10/2019 22:27

This is us too with 20 month old DS. I’d love to know when it’ll get easier.

AthollPlace · 10/10/2019 22:29

I put a YouTube video on my phone too. Something really engaging like Sesame Street songs. Baby holds the phone with both hands while I brush.

Watching for my cat as the vet wants daily brushing and it hell. Biting/scratching/wailing. Liking the towel idea so I'm not shredded.

Tried the phone and video on it 😥 second I start to brush he drops the phone, thrashes and screams 😭 so hard!
