Crawling, sleeping and cot safety

I'm looking for some advice. We have an 8 month old DS who's almost mobile. He's desperate to crawl, gets on all fours and can move his legs/ move forward like a caterpillar. This has made sleeping very difficult, he wants to crawl constantly and rolls on his front to crawl even when he's half asleep, resulting in tears. Is this just a phase or is there anything we can do?

We are also having another problem. Since about 4 months DS had been self-settling by rolling onto his side, he seems very comfortable in this position. However, past couple of nights he's done this and got his legs stuck between the wooden slats on the crib. Is there anything we can do bar buying a crib with a solid side? I'm not a fan of bumpers due to the suffocation risks.

Is he not in a sleeping bag? I find this prevents legs going through bars. The rolling thing is just a phase, mine started sleeping on his front about that age.

He is in a sleeping bag, still manages to get his legs stuck... The bag is quite loose on the bottom, he has to wear 12-18 month because of his size.
