Hi, so Im freaking out abit. I visited my mother today with my 5 week old dd. When I arrived she had a cold sore on her lip and she confirmed they had been flaring up all week so I asked her not to kiss dd as I know the risks and I outlined a few of the articles I have read in the past with the babies immature immune system ect. Anyway when she was holding her she kissed her! I wiped where she kissed and explained again why I didn't want her kissing her with a cold sore then she did it again after about 5 minutes. They were both on the head but now I'm freaking out and I don't know what to do. She's not showing any signs yet but it's only been 5 hours or so.

I think she will be ok but ffs I'd be raging!

Calm down first - she’s not guaranteed to get a cold sore, and if she does there’s no certainty of complications either. Keep an eye on her and ring 111 if you’re concerned and need advice. You’re DM has behaved like an irresponsible twat by the way. I’d be having serious words and then no words at all for quite a long time...

Bumping for you OP. Have no answer but I'd be freaking too. Flowers

Thankyou everyone I do realise I need to chill out abit and keep an eye for signs I'm just so angry that she dismissed everything I said and did it anyway. This could have been so avoidable but no she didn't care. I hate that I probably won't be able to fully calm down for a month or so until I know for sure everything is okay.

I would be furious tbh. Kissing a newborn when you have a cold sore is dangerous and irresponsible.

Show your mother this article.

I did send her a heated message after the visit with 5+ articles and links (including the NHS guidelines) to hopefully make her realise how serious it is. She did mock me for being overprotective when I first requested she didn't kiss her, which is due to lack of education surrounding it but wasnt interested in actually finding out the risks and why not to...
