DS thrives at schools but absolutely unbearable at home

Ds almost 8 and loves school, very competitive. I know this is the beginning of the year and they get tired and need time to get new teachers/classmates used to but from the moment he gets home to the moment we leave again for school he is an absolute nightmare. He is disruptive, demanding, manic.
I keep asking him if everything is ok at school and he tells me he really enjoys it and he likes his teachers so I'm baffled as to why he is like this.
I get that they need to hold it together at school so they come home and just melt but his behaviour is excessive and ruins most of hour weekends. He is1 of 4 btw so they have firm boundaries set and while the others are tired too they are nowhere this bad. Just hope this phase passes very soon .
The only thing that seems to work if threaten to go and speak to his teacher as he is petrified of anyone finding out about his behaviour.
My only other guess will be friendships. Maybe he is slightly struggling as it's a mixed up new class this year. I will ask him but any recommendations is appreciated
