At what age is it ok for children to walk to school on their own? Where school is close?

Most schools dont allow it before year 5.

Year 5

It depends on the child and the route. No one size fits all answer. Anywhere from 6-11.

dontcallmeduck · 31/08/2019 22:09

Ours allow it from juniors so 7/8 but personally I won’t allow it until at least in year 4 possibly 5. More because of the cars than the walking

imnotkeithlemon · 01/09/2019 07:44

6 seems very young still

Our school would let children walk home alone from KS2 if their parent sent in a permission letter. I waited til year 5 for both of mine.

As pp have said though, it totally depends on who, where and how they feel about it.

StockTakeFucks · 01/09/2019 07:46

Check with your school, they will have an age limit.

Other than that it depends on the child, distance to school, environment etc.

DD could've easily walked to school at 6. We're 2 minutes away door to door. I can see the playground in my garden. Other kids that come from the other side of town obviously couldn't and shouldn't.

There's no straight answer.

Surely it depends on the child and the route, there's no way to answer it as a general question.

How does the school know if a child has walked there by themselves? My dcs school didn't have any rules but they would have had no way to tell anyway parents didn't have to report in at the gate
