Concerned about baby poop

Hoping for some sound advice here as gp not very helpful. My DD had her rotavirus vax 4 weeks ago and hasn't had a normal BM since. She goes up to 4 days (normal as she is BF) has foul smelling gas (probably normal as going days) but it's thick and foul smelling. I was washing it off her clothes today and it smells of minerals, iron even. No sign of blood. It's mustard colour but peanut buttery and she's breastfed. It's been like this since the vax. I'm thinking to give her a probiotic? She's content and thriving but something doesn't seem right here.

I'll add she's 13 weeks old and on the poop visual guide it's like solids fed baby poo

Have you tried asking your HV some times they are more knowledgeable.

You also want to consider an allergy.

Is she on any medication?

Take a nappy to HV but if she's happy and it's yellow then they'll say it's ok.

I think sometimes they just take more fluid out so it's thicker.

HJ82 · 23/08/2019 08:28

@hormonesorDHbeingadick she has an iron supp but has done since birth and it's never changed her poop. Occasionally has a formula night bottle but once 60ml tip up bottle unlikely to change her BM this much, never has before. This has only been this way since vaccines. I expected it the first week but not 4 weeks later. Maybe this is the new normal. Oh HV I forgot about her. Came once and never heard from her again

Ask the GP to do a stool sample as you feel something just doesn't feel right.

I've breastfed both and it shouldn't smell foul in my experience. It's probably a bug that will pass but best to get professional advice as MN is not the best place when it is a baby's health.

@perdigal already went to gp. Who said don't worry, probably normal. (Apparently she's Pediatric trained) i'll email her Paediatrician - she's much more helpful. Just thought other mums could give insight into their own babies movements so I could compare

Has she had her second rotavirus vaccine? If not she must be due soon. Ask about it at the appointment the nurse/ doctor should know if that’s within the bounds of a normal reaction.

Also my similar aged baby also only poos every few days and will spend a couple of days before stinking the place out with his farts.

HJ82 · 23/08/2019 09:28

@Cyclemad222 spoke HV who said to take her off her supplement which was prescribed or 1 year by her Pediatrician AND to bottle feed her water ? she's 13 weeks old. Water? Hmm

Please don't give a 13 week old baby water!!!!!

Jesus. Some health professional's advice is plain worrying.

I have no poop advice, but please don't give water!

maidenover · 23/08/2019 10:40

I wouldn’t do either of those things. I would speak to your paediatrician to see if the supplement has any Poo related side effects.

HJ82 · 23/08/2019 10:40

@pooopypants I know right! She was also premature so she's really only 9 weeks. She also told me to take her off her iron which was prescribed as she was premmie and she needs it as she has no iron stores. I'll seek advice elsewhere

@maidenover the rotavirus made her poo revolting, my concern is that it's disturbed her flora and I'm wondering whether to give a probiotic (I know BM has natural probiotic) but her poo has been like this since the vaccine 4 weeks ago.

Ask at the appointment she must have soon for the 2nd rotavirus vaccine. They should ask you how they were after the last vaccines to assess if there is any reason why they shouldn’t have them again.

I wouldn’t feel confident advising you to give a baby that was premature and is under the guidance of a paediatrician a probiotic.
