cutting babys finger nails, is there a special way to do this???

My ds is 18wks old and when i cut his fingernails his asleep so i don't have him wriggling about. But everytime his nails grow back his nails get ingrown and look very sore. What am i doing wrong. Just cant seem to do get it right.

sounds like you are cutting them too short. Try biting/chewing them off when you are having a cuddle or BF him.

I was told by my granny that you should always bite a baby's nails, rather than cutting.

I used to do them when he was asleep on my knee after a BF. Used very thin adult nail scissors so that I could get under the nail, always cut straight across and leave a bit of white. Then started doing them if he fell asleep in the car. Can now (at 2yrs) sit him down and do them by making it into a bit of a game and saying 'snip' when I do them, which he says with me! Bless!
A word of warning - don't use the baby nail clippers!! First time I did, I snipped the skin off the tip of his finger - I can still remember the shocked/hurt/pain look on his little face before he started crying and it started bleeding. Never used them again - hence the thin pointy nail scissors. They are very sharp at the end, though, so no good on a flailing child!

Much easier to 'get it right' in terms of length & less stressful for all involved (still sometimes bite dd's nails and she's 16 mths now )

ds is 13 months and i bite his but he hates it. i know it can't hurt him but he really seems in pain!

Adult nail scissors (but have a fairly rounded end to blades). Hold their hand with the palm facing you and the fingers up. Gently 'pull down' the pad of their finger slightly with your thumb (as you hold it between your finger & thumb). Then cut the nail! I find this a lot easier than going at it from the back of the hand side iyswim. Tried biting but couldn't get it to work and was worried about my big gnashers and that little tiny finger!!

I use baby nail clippers and we've never had an accident, although he struggles and fights all the way through it.

Also was not told how difficult this would be. Like trying to give hamster a manicure. Have used baby nail scissors but can't get them short enough so scratches himself and me. DH taken to filing them but think he may want facial next..

I use the little clippers on DS, and I do it just after he's finished a feed, when he's in that drunken stupor. I am scared to do it too close though, so I just do it little and often.

I think the general advice given by MWs now (well, certainly in my area) is not to cut babys nails with scissors or baby nail clippers. They should be bitten off, preferably after a bath wen they are all soft....

I bit all DS3's off today - they were like talons again - and there was no way I wanted to wait until tomorrow morning when DH could cut them (he's really good at it - I'm hopeless)

for babies...nibble them while baby is having its milk

I couldn't bring myself to bite - crazy I know when you see how short mine are. I use baby scissors in the bath so they're nice and soft. DD is 8 months.
