2 week old ds very strong sucking desire - will this wear off?

ds2, two weeks old, has an unbelievable sucking reflex! If he's not feeding he's looking for something to suck. He stops crying instantly if offered my little finger and will suck it indefinitely! My question is, will this wear off? Is is a newborn thing? Could it be relieving pain? He had a very quick third stage labour with me pushing for 17 minutes only, and he has two blood shot eyes as a result. Could it be pressure of discomfort in his head?
If I did give him a dummy - what are the consequences? I'm worried about it interfering with breastfeeding and also giving him something he won't be able to settle without.

Any advice from mums and dads with similar sucky babies?! Thanks!

Some babies just love to suck. all mine have been very sucky up until 4 months and some for longer. If it doesn't bother you then it's the bestest most luxuriously wonderful feeling for your newborn. It will also keep your milk supply strong and plentiful.
I can't help re the dummies, mine would never take them, I tried!!!!!!!!

ds3 & 4 have both been like this. after several weeks of being used as a human dummy by ds3 i decided to give him a real dummy so i could get things done! he gave it up himself at about 3 months, just wasnt interested. ds4 is now 5 months and still has a dummy to go to sleep but doesnt suck it all the time anymore. didnt interfere with bf at all, cant tell you about long term consequences im afraid as i havent got there yet, i just know i couldnt have coped without giving it

dd1 is now 2 years and still sucks alot. If she doesn't have her dummie, which has to be prised off her, her fingers or whatever else find their way into her mouth.

dd2 on the other hand won't take a dummie and will only suck on hands/blankets if hungry or very tired.

DS now 20 mths was like this too. I relented and gave him a dummy at 2 weeks as my nipples were shredded. He still has it now and as the previous poster has said if he doesn't have it with him (I try to keep it to naps and bed time and carseat) he sucks/chews on anything else - collars of his clothes, toys, drink bottle spout etc etc.
