Smacking and biting

My partners son is just under 2, he is usually really well behaved and is no bother. Tonight he had slapped me 3 times and also bit me. Not sure where this has come from as we have a great bond, he prefers to come to me rather than his dad for comfort at times and is always happy to see me. I’m not overly concerned about his behaviour because kids will be kids, right? But does anyone know how we can nip this in the bud? Tonight we told him his behaviour was naughty and not to smack and I told him biting is only for when he is eating (don’t know if this makes sense to him lol ) he cried quite a bit when he realised his behaviour was wrong and my partner had to stop me from going to him to comfort him. But after 5 mins or so he gave me a kiss and cuddle and that was an apology if you will.
Just hoping it’s a phase but anyone got any ideas on what we can do? He lives with his mum full time which my partner and I are on great terms with her and consider her a friend.

I also thought maybe he’s got a bit over excited? As a few mins prior to the bite he came and laid on me and was saying ‘awwwwww’ as if to cuddle
