Need advice on feeding baby

Hi mums,

I really need some advice regarding my baby DS and feeding. I'm a first time mum and I'm worried I'm not feeding him properly.

He seems hungry all the time, I'm talking less than 2 hours between feeds and he's screaming the house down. He'll finish a bottle and fuss for more instantly.

He has 7-8oz per bottle. Has one in the morning, one in afternoon, one at tea and one before he goes to bed. Then he sleeps until the next morning and it starts again.

I've given him 7oz at half 6 and he started screaming at 8 o clock so I've made him more and he's drained it.

Is this normal? I'm so worried I'm doing it wrong or I'm underfeeding him Sad

Thanks all

How old is he?

Underworld345 · 14/08/2019 20:38

Are you sure he’s wanting food? If he’s a newborn just feed feed feed as required. They need a lot in the early days as they have small stomachs.

Sorry - he's 15 weeks old. I'm worried about overfeeding him. Sometimes his belly looks really bloated too, we've been to the GP and she prescribed Gaviscon infant

You don’t say how old? Is he weaning yet? If not 4 bottles in 24 hours is not much really. My DD was having 6 x 6-7oz up until she was getting to grips with weaning and even now at nearly 9 months she’s only just dropping down to 3 bottles along with 3 meals!

Firefly111 · 14/08/2019 20:51

Sorry cross posted with you. At 15 weeks 4 bottles in 24 hours doesn’t sound much at all. If he’s crying for more then feed him! Follow his lead. You can’t overfeed him.

@Firefly111 Ah thank you. It just worries me that his belly looks bloated sometimes

Four bottles a day seems a bit low for a baby that young (although I'm not that familiar with formula feeding). Unless he's gaining way more weight than his curve or throwing up then I'd just feed him on demand for the time being.

Obviously not suggesting you not speak to your health or anything but I think little baby pot bellies are quite normal Smile

If he is having 28-32oz per 24 hours I think that is about right

ohflowerofscotland · 14/08/2019 20:56

@Celebelly Thank you. He is following above his centile line and is gaining weight healthily

He was being sick after every feed, hence why I went to the GP Who said he had reflux. That was a week ago and today he's started doing it again.

Not sure if I should revisit GP

You said that he’s going less than 2 hours between feeds, but also that he is only having 4 feeds in 24 hours? 4 feeds is not much at all for a 15 week old.

dementedpixie · 14/08/2019 20:58

If he has reflux smaller bottles more often may be better

Celebelly · 14/08/2019 21:00

Are you doing paced feeding and giving breaks for him to digest, etc? It can take some time for their brains to catch up to their tummies, especially if he's gulping down.
