Just being nosy, you can change your name. Just wondered how many Mumsnet children are unexpected/planned, how common it is. What's your score for surprise babies? Mine's 1/2.

Ds1 unplanned, 4 years earlier than we had intended to have a baby.
Ds2 also unplanned but we had intended to have another baby.
Ds3 planned, supposed to be a girl, following charts and timing sex before ovulation etc but got another boy! That timing thing doesn't work.........

Needed 8 rounds of fertility treatment, so DD was definitely planned.
Would have loved to have had an unplanned child though, it's so much easier to do the "forget the condom tonight and let's take our chances" than it is to make hard logical decisions about how much you're willing to invest in treatment [wistful look]. In fact, when we were engaged, we did do a bit of "risking it". If only we'd known then what we know now!

Both planned.

both sort of half planned!!!

rapunzelle · 14/08/2007 14:30

All 3 planned in meticulous detail for our ideal age gap, and to avoid Christmas and Sumer holidays.

Dear God am I a control freak?

lulurose · 14/08/2007 14:35

dd1 planned for an autumn birthday (the teacher in me)

dd2 unplanned, still breastfeeding my 5 month old, no period etc....oooppps

MrsPuddleduck · 14/08/2007 14:55

rapunzelle - what is your ideal age gap?

My DS1 is 4 next month and DS2 will be 18 months - don't know when (if ever) to think about number 3..

Torn between waiting until DS2 is older so I have more time to myself and the baby this time, and the fact that the 2 1/2 year age difference I have between my two is just starting to pay off as they play together really nicely now. Plus if I have a large gap between 2 and 3 will it spoil the "dynamics" of the family?

thomcat · 14/08/2007 14:59

DD1 - total shock - oh right ok, looks like we're about to be parents then!

DD2 - was a sort of plannbed in the 'we won't have an oly child so at some stage we'll probably end up having anohter' way, but had been having the pill injection and took so long to get pregnant that when it happened we were both shocked and a bit like - oh, so it's happening now then, ummm ok.!

DC3 - again I liked the idea of 3 but DP and said no way, errr too late I got pregnant!

GreatAuntieWurly · 14/08/2007 15:06

both planned

Nemo2007 · 14/08/2007 15:09

All mine were sorted of planned
DS I said to DH I would like a baby he said ok and turned out we were already 5wks pg.
DD1 Had a mc just before so we were TTC her
DD2 I stupidly said to DH oh wouldnt a Jan baby be nice as we have birthdays in oct, nov, dec and february. Dh replied yes ok but we will wait a couple of years as DD1 was 3mths. Turns out I was already pg again!!

rarrie · 14/08/2007 20:21

Sad to admit, both were planned - right down to the month that they were born. I have an exactly three year age gap. I had wanted a week between their birthdays, but DD2 was a week late, so I have a two week gap. Other than that, they were both very much planned with military precision!

lubyluby · 14/08/2007 20:26

ummm 3/3 unplanned.
ds1 came along not long after we got married, well he was born one week exactly before our first wedding anniversary. we had planned on travelling etc and haivng kids when i was about the age i am now so 10 years early.

ds2 was a kind of planned in that we stopped using contraception about 2 years previously and relied on the withdrawal method but weren't too worried if anythign happened (sorry if tmi)

and dd was a complete surprise, actively not trying but found out at almost 4 months gone. lovely lovely surprise, was a shock and took a while to adjust but well worth it all in the end, with the move to the bigger house, bigger car, more hours at work for both of us etc etc.
