Anxious 2 year old

My dd is 2.5 and sometimes gets really upset often in busy new places. She’ll want to cling to me / will try to escape. If she’s confident somewhere (like a regular class or playgroup) she appears really independent and confident.
It’s hard as I also have a baby to look after as well. My friend’s two year olds don’t seem to cause them any problems!
Not sure whether this is just a phase or whether I should worry about it. She’s often anxious around new people as well - not on the street as such but if we have friends / family over to our house.
Any advice? Anyone else been here? Thanks

Hi OP, this sounds completely normal to me. She's only little, she prefers familiar places, in busy new places she needs extra reassurance. Whether it's just a phase or is part of her personality (i.e she turns out to be the kind of person who prefers familiarity to excitement), either way there's nothing to worry about from what you have said. Try not to compare her to your friends' kids. I'm sure they have different challenges!

Thanks. It is hard as a few things over the last few months I’ve had to give up on as her reaction is so extreme - soft play, a farm, a new toddler group. She screams until she’s on her way out. But I guess, like you say, even if that is part of who she is then that’s ok. I try to prep her in advance but it’s not enough most of the time.

I know I shouldn’t compare but I feel like all the other mums are having a nice chat while I contend with screaming toddler and the poor baby who doesn’t get a look in!

This is my 2 year old at the moment! Glad I’m not the only one!
