Hey all lil one has now started to teethe I believe , however I have been put off teething gel and do not really want to use it , I have read that it can mess up baby's latch when breastfeeding !

Was wondering if anyone has exclusively breastfed 🤱 and used teething gels and what has been there experience also wondering if anyone has used the powder or granules whilst breastfeeding!

Any advice would be helpful 😚

I'm still breastfeeding my 19 month old who has never had a bottle. Honestly teething has been pretty much a non issue. I give bonjela and calpol as needed with no impact on her latch. She has bitten me a few times and I just take the boob away for a few minutes before letting her relatch.

Sorry just saw your post about the powder and granules - no I haven't used these and I wouldn't either. They're very expensive and homeopathic so have no active ingredients. Bonjela is quite good though and also you can get water filled teething rings that go nice and cold in the fridge.

Couldn't you just use ibuprofen? I found that to be the most effective for teething anyway and no risk of it affecting bf.

I've used teething gel, calpol and granules for my DD while she's been teething and haven't had any issues with breastfeeding (other than her biting!)
I find that she struggles to feed when her teeth are really bothering her and using something to take the edge off the pain actually helps her latch on and feed properly.

I have used Anbesol liquid with no problem whilst breastfeeding

Never heard that before. If your baby is old enough to be teething latch should not be that fragile any more. I would try the gel if you want to. Calpol and ibuprofen also work well if your baby is really miserable but take a while to kick in.

Currently breastfeeding my (almost) 10 months old and she has had no issues with her latch on the occasions we use teething gel. Can’t comment on granules as we haven’t used them

HerSymphonyAndSong · 30/07/2019 17:20

Like others I was suspicious of the ingredients and effectiveness of powders so I didn’t bother

It’s possible that teething itself could affect latch I suppose if they have a particularly sore mouth, but I didn’t find that to be the case. I did find that the excess saliva and extra feeding for comfort made me a bit sore though

I’ve never used teething gel with either of mine. It’s not nice. If really in a lot of pain, I’d give calpol.
