Garden safety

We have a 16 month old confident Walker who is a nightmare for steps. She just will not learn to not run straight at then 😭

We have just bought a new house with a couple of steps up to the decking area. We aren't moving in until October so probably won't have doors open and be in and out as much as we are in summer but I am worried that we aren't forever going to be chasing her and stopping her hurtling down the steps.

When do toddlers learn this? And how do we teach her step safety?

We have concrete steps in a very sloping garden, we used trellis as a lightweight and easily removable (for us adults) fence to stop toddlers getting anywhere potentially dangerous.
But do teach your toddler how to use steps/stairs safely - crawling up forwards going up and backwards going down.

We are trying so hard to get her to go down backwards or on her bum but she is hopeless. She just runs right at them!!!
