Is my DD READY TO POTTY TRAIN????? OPINIONS WELCOME

Right she is 2.5 and as far as I can see is not particularly interested in potty training. This is what she does do:

  • 'I done a poo' she says even when she hasn't.

  • Has taken her nappy off when she she has done a poo. This only happened once.

  • Has sat on potty today and called it her toilet.

  • but then (OMG) I was upstairs and DS shouted that DD's hands are covered in poo. I rush downstairs to check and it is like she has dipped her hands in a bucket of poo. She has smeared it all over the furniture and seems a tad nonchalant.

  • After much cleaning and wiping I am beginning to rethink my plans to toilet train.

Any thoughts.

That's kinda what I thought. I had terrible trouble in ds in the poo department. He withheld it for years and even now can hold it too long. Never liked doing poos. I don't want to make too many mistakes with dd.

I was also thinking how summer is the best time.

Leave it! Leave it! Only start when she tells you on a regular basis she needs to use the potty/toilet.

I would say that at 2.5 you should def stick at it. I think at that age they should be at least partially trained if not fully. Thouh if you feel that she isnt ready then dont rush her as you will only frighten her fromthe potty/toilet.

notnowbernard · 30/07/2007 23:04

what is 'partially trained' though?

Having awareness at 2.5 is great, I agree, but more a stepping stone to being 'fully' trained.

kittywits · 30/07/2007 23:06

No, not ready yet!

hertsnessex · 30/07/2007 23:07

ds1 was fully trained by 2.5
ds2 is 2.5 and doesnt know when he is even weeing - we tried in big boy pants for a cpl of days last week - and after no attempts to get on the potty/toilet i thought we will try again next month or so! good luck.

partially trained = trained in the day

my dd1 was trained at 21 months in the day and 23 in the night. i mus say though that she got up one day - the morning after I had just bought a large box of nappes - and decided that she wanted big girls pants on. Hasnt had a nappy on in the day since. We held off for a couple of months to do the night thing though as we were in the middle of moving house.

yelnats · 30/07/2007 23:10

mind you - large box of nappies has come in handy for dd2 (5 months).

notnowbernard · 30/07/2007 23:19

Wow, Yelnats - excellent for you and your dd. DD1 is 3.8 and still only about 80-90% reliably dry in the day. Nowhere near dry at night yet.

How did you do the night-time thing?

CristinaTheAstonishing · 30/07/2007 23:53

I'd say your DD isn't ready yet. When she says she needs the potty take her to it, if she does something fine, if not, look as surprised as she is that there isn't something there. She'll start making the connection of what you expect to find in it. (I know it sounds pretty obvious but I presume she hasn't actually seen anyone else producing in the potty - unless you can get DS to demonstrate.)

yelnats · 02/08/2007 09:16

TBH she did it on her own - when nshe came off in the day, after about 2nd or 3rd night they were dry at night but we left taking them off her til we were settled in new house. Wehn I did I just made sure that she went to the toilet just before bed and if she woke at all once in bed I took her straight to the toilet. It may be a good idea to get some Pampers bed mats for the first few weeks that way if theres any accidents then you just change the mat and the sheet - til morning at least anyway.

We were really luck with her though - I know I will have a hard time when it comes dd2's time.
