DS straining hard to wee on potty - am very worried!

I was wondering if anybody had any advice/experience of this.

DS is 22 mo, and I have a potty so he can get used to the idea of sitting on it before we enter into proper toilet training.

He has done a couple of wees and even poos, although it was more good luck than good judgement.

However, I think the praise he was given when he managed this has gone to his head! If he sees the potty, he wants to take his nappy off and sit on it, and he pushes really hard until he produces the tiniest amount of wee! I have tried to take any pressure off, and am not "over-praising" if he does do anything.

Help!!!!

When DS started on the potty he used to sound like he was straining in an effort to do his wee. It carried on for quite a while. Think it was about learning to get his wee under control. He doesn't do it now but has been 'dry' for over a year now.

Thanks - glad I'm not alone!

It seems odd, because when he does a wee any other time (like in the bath, on the carpet, you know, all the convenient places) there doesn't seem to be any straining at all!

My dd does this sometimes, I'm on day three of potty training now, and she'll strain to try and do one sometimes as she knows how pleased and excited I get when she does one - sometimes she'll strain and break wind, but this is usually because she's trying to go again too soon after the last wee, she's getting better though, I'm sure you're ds will too, at least he's keen!
