I don’t know the difference between the stage 1/2 milk but it’s supposed to be minimal according to the recent documentary. I think it’s just slightly different amounts of the same ingredients tbh

Could you not just change back to stage 1 milk until baby is old enough to go to cow or alternative milks?

My DS didn’t like stage 2 cow and gate so we moved to HIPP organic stage 2 - no issues at all!

Stage 2 is less well regulated. Experts recommend using stage 1 until the baby is 1 year old. Just ignore the marketing!

You don’t need it. NHS guidance is to use stage 1 only. They only make stage 2,3 and so on so they can market it as they aren’t allowed to market stage 1 formula.

Stage 2 isn't as well regulated as stage 1, so will vary between brands. It's quite safe and recommended to keep using stage 1 until you stop giving formula.

It's mostly a marketing thing however I seem to remember that the balance of ingredients was slightly different, more iron for example.

DD2 got severely constipated on cow and gate 2 so there are definitely some differences. We went back to stage 1 and just stuck with that.

Stage 2 is just a marketing ploy to keep you buying baby milk. It's relatively new to the market ( maybe a decade or so) I'm sure everyone before that time has not missed out by not having it.

OhBcereus · 18/07/2019 06:44

They only invented stage 2 milk because there is a ban on advertising formula for babies under 6 months. Our DD is 13mo and is still drinking bottles of stage 1 because she's not keen on cows milk yet.

Glad we're all so well informed. Well done team!

We briefly switched to stage 2 and our DS got a constantly upset stomach. Used stage 1 after that until he was a year. All fine.
I read about it being basically the same and the stage 2 just being used so they could market formula, but it was definitely different in some way! Just not a good way.

Mitebiteatnite · 18/07/2019 08:31

Exactly what everyone above has said. There is absolutely no need to change to stage 2 milk, it's a marketing gimmick. Stage 1 until age 1 (that's got a nice ring to it) and then onto cows milk. DD and DS both went off formula at around 9 or 10 months and the health visitor advised that as they were eating well otherwise, we could drop the formula and give them cows milk then. Neither would drink out of a bottle at that age, so they had cows milk in a beaker in the morning and evening.

Thank you everyone Smile

To believe the proteins are longer (but I have no idea what that actually means) which can.malr it harder to digest. SMA have brought out a 'Weaning milk', because reasons? Which cheaper than the first stage but incredibly similar to the first stage .
