Still confused by bodysuits!

I asked similar before ds was born, but I still don't get it! I have a drawer rammed full of newborn and 0-3 months bodysuits- short sleeves with poppers between the legs. All were gifts- they all have lovely patterns or writing on them.

However, everything I've read says that these are to be used as a layer under sleepsuits. DS is 4 weeks now and I've not used any of the bodysuits: I just dress him in a plain white supermarket multipack vest/ bodysuit (the type that button under nappy) and a sleep suit. If it's cool when we're out, I use a blanket in the pram too.

It's July and temperatures here haven't got above 21 degrees so it's never been 'hot' for him to be in short sleeves and I can't see it being hot enough for the whole of the summer.

So do I just use these bodysuits under his sleep suit and no one ever sees them other than me when I change him? If so, what's the point of them being so heavily patterned?

So they look pretty to make people buy them. I have occasionally, in very hot weather, just had the baby in a body suit and nothing else. But, yes - most of the time they're just acting as vests!

Thank you! As long as I know that I can make my peace with it! I just thought I must be doing something wrong!

Do you mean romper type things? Like little arms and legs - more than a vest but not as much as a sleepsuit? It has been insanely warm where I am recently and I have had him in these at night with a light growbag on or even no grobag at all some nights. I also use them during the day for messy play or again if it's really hot. I find they are a good mix between a vest and a sleepsuit so I do quite like them I must say!

Yeah, I also think they are pointless when they have patterns etc! We have had a few quite warm days, so I'll not put anything on top of the vest when it is like that, but normally they'll be under another layer and not seen. Long sleeved ones I'm more likely to put on without another layer, or under dungarees, so are more likely to be seen with us, but we only have 2 of those that fit at the moment!

I use a bodysuit like a T-shirt with some trousers over the top.

Caterina99 · 09/07/2019 19:30

I live in a pretty hot climate (in the summer) so my summer baby wore them as t shirts, either by themselves or with shorts/leggings. My winter baby just wore them under sleepsuits.

We got given sleepsuits as gifts from Uk family and friends for my summer baby and he never wore them as it’s far too hot here

modgepodge · 09/07/2019 20:24

See my drawer is full of sleepsuits I’m not sure will get worn! Bodysuits/vests I put with leggings/dungarees/shorts, depending on the weather. At night mine wears a vest (sleeve length depending on temperature) with a sleeping bag. All these lovely slepsuits, and it’s too hot for them. Plus, when I go to baby groups no baby over about 2 months seems to wear a sleep suit in the day?? When she was newborn she lived in them but now not so much.

Rainatnight · 09/07/2019 20:30

I use them the way you would do t shirts for a grown up - so as a short sleeved garment with little trousers or whatever. Surely here in the summer it’s warm enough for that??

coffeeforone · 09/07/2019 20:36

I found the long sleeved ones even more useless! I have packs of unworn ones from both DC!

KatharinaRosalie · 09/07/2019 20:39

I always used them on their own (i.e as a top) when it was warm enough. Why not?

Rainatnight · 09/07/2019 20:40

I used to put the long sleeved ones under dungarees on their own if it was mild, or under a top or jumper if it was chilly

(I don’t know why I’ve suddenly become Defender of the Bodysuits).

georgialondon · 09/07/2019 20:51

Mine live in them. I use them as a top with joggers and maybe a cardie on top.

whatswithtodaytoday · 09/07/2019 20:53

I thought that when mine was tiny, but it was winter so they were only worn under sleepsuits. Now he's four months and it's warm I have sleepsuits he won't wear because it's too warm, and he's always in a long or short sleeved bodysuit depending on the temperature. I use them as a top with trousers/leggings, or on their own with a sleeping bag at night.

drspouse · 09/07/2019 21:58

I used them the same as @Rainatnight - like t-shirts but they keep the nappy on.

INeedNewShoes · 09/07/2019 22:04

I quite often used bodysuits instead of tops if they had nice patterns.

Or sometimes put a long sleeved body under a t shirt so you see the sleeves but I know not everyone likes the layered look!

BertieBotts · 09/07/2019 22:04

I put them as an underneath layer every day. I like the patterns, it gives me something to look at. I prefer that to plain white. I don't like them as tops as I don't like the tucked in look. But they do work fairly well like that, if it's hotter than expected or a t-shirt gets sticky when out I can take that layer off and they still have something on.

Now DS2 is crawling and cruising when it's over 20 degrees in the day sometimes I'll just have him in a vest, no trousers or top, around the house. And when it's 23 or higher in the bedroom and expected to be all night I dress him in them for bed as well.

I agree the long sleeved ones are useless except for under dungarees, then they are quite good.

Pascha · 09/07/2019 22:08

I used both long and short sleeved bodysuits as a top with joggers, leggings, dungarees etc. I used them all year round with a cardi or top over it. I liked the pattern ones best and used plain just at night .

BertieBotts · 09/07/2019 22:22

I like trying to match the pattern/colours on the vest to the rest of the outfit :o

When they're wearing sleepsuits it makes for a pleasing combination at changes, and when they're into tops and bottoms their tops are forever riding up anyway so it's half on display.

Tonight DS2 is wearing a blue sleepsuit with rockets and little red stars. Under that he has a vest which is red with white stars. It just makes me happy.

Yogurtcoveredricecake · 10/07/2019 08:32

I like them patterned! We used to use them as t-shirts in last year's hot weather and he used to sleep in them and a thin sleeping bag as it was boiling last summer.

CherryPavlova · 10/07/2019 08:36

Mine used to wear just those in warm weather. I always thought they were excellent at holing nappy in place.
