Close pop in nappies

I’ve been given some close pop in reusable nappies which I am keen to use on my four month old. They seem to be in good condition except the booster/soaker inserts are quite rough (ie not soft) like they have been washed lots of times. Is there anything I can do to make them softer?
Also it looks like you can buy replacement inserts but it looks like they are different depending on whether I have version 1 or version 2. Does anyone know how to tell the difference?

You can tumble dry the inserts which might help a bit. I wouldn't bother buying replacements (especially if you've got hard water they'll just go the same way) - you could use a fleece liner in them then the rough bit will be away from the skin?

I’d try fleece liners first, on top of the insert, as these will be softer, and will be cheaper than buying new inserts.
You probably know this but don’t use fabric softener as it can affect the absorbency.

Ooh these are our favourite nappies! V1 outers have just a strip of Velcro at the back of the nappies for attaching the side Velcro during laundry, whereas v2s have a small slot either side to poke the velcro tab through for laundry, if that makes sense. We preferred v2s.
Tumble drying on low occasionally will fluff them up but honestly baby won't notice - a fleece liner is a great plan.

That’s just how they are. Even brand new, they aren’t very soft. You can try a fleece liner if you want, just make sure you tuck it in well as pop ins can be quite narrow.
