5 weeks old - poop in every nappy.

My LO is 5 weeks old. Every nappy of his is soiled. Sometimes, 2-3 big wet poppy nappies in a day with smaller patches of poop on other nappies in between.

I'm not sure if it's normal. He's exclusively breastfed.

It's also a little worrying whenever we bathe him. No matter how much you try to clean him beforehand and how quick you try to be, there's always small yellow poop ended up in the bath water by the time you finish bathing him. I don't know how this could keep the hygiene, particularly when I wipe his eyes and wash his hair using the same water (I do start with wiping eyes the first thing to reduce the chances of water being contaminated by that time).

Can someone offer some reassurance/tips please~

Thanks!

My youngest was exactly the same! He could have a poo nappy up to 10 times a day. And quite often they weren't even little ones either! At least once a day I'd have to change his clothes due to a poo explosion! He is my youngest of 4 and none of the others were like it.

If I were you I'd maybe leave his nappy on whilst I (awkwardly) washed his hair and face. Then whip it off and wash the rest of his body.

For what it's worth my DS continued to poop in the bath most times until around 18 months old 😂 even now at exactly 2 years old he can have up to 4/5 poops a day.

Oh and I got told it's very normal for an exclusively breastfed baby to be like that. As long as they're gaining weight and the poo is normal colour and no mucus.

God I remember this. Ds pood constantly but not in Bath tbf. He once pood so hard it hit the opposite wall!
Mention to hv if your worried at monly weighing but provided he's eating and putting on weight then he is prob okay.

To assist with the hair/face washing water issue, have a small bucket nearby and take out some of the bath water before you start. Use this to do his face and hair, and you can be sure it is clean.

My DS was like this, every nappy had poo in it. He did grow out of it after a few months.

DonPablo · 02/07/2019 14:14

Both of mine were like this at that age, I just thought it was normal. I didn't wash their face in their bath water, I always had a clean wet flannel at the start of the bath for their face, ears and hands and then washed the rest of them in the bath water.

Always talk to your hv if you're at all unsure. It's what they're there for. Smile

Yep. In one and and straight out of the other.
It does calm down as they get older - I promise.
Then randomly they don't poop for 8 days in a row (usually because of a growth spurt) and you panic about where all the poop has gone. 😂

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 02/07/2019 14:16

Sounds normal to me

newmomof1 · 02/07/2019 14:17

Yeah it's normal - we tend to have 3 proper poopy nappies with a number of small poops through the day

CmdrCressidaDuck · 02/07/2019 14:19

Entirely normal. Breastfed babies often either go once in several days, or every single feed. Both have their disadvantages!

It'll settle down as the gut matures.
In the meantime I agree with just washing his head and face first with nappy on, then a quick wash of bottom end. Or just do a "top and tail" style wash rather than a full bath, you can introduce proper baths down the line.

BarberBabyBubbles · 02/07/2019 14:19

Yes it’s normal - dd1 was like this but she pooed about 8 times a day. Don’t use bath water to clean your baby but use water from the tap on cotton wool or a clean flannel.

RickAstleyGaveMeUp · 02/07/2019 14:21

There was one memorable day when my (perfectly healthy, breastfed) DS pooped 15 times. DD was still in nappies then too.

Fatkins · 02/07/2019 14:37

I had one like this too! I also had one who wouldn't poo for days. I worried more about that one actually, but both are / were fine.

BingBo · 02/07/2019 23:42

Thank you for reassuring, ladies!

I guess I just have to be more creative when it comes to bath time. More and more it sounds like a two-men job!

BTW, he did shoot it on me twice with great accuracy, LOL!

My baby is 9 weeks and she poos (what feels like) constantly. She’s also breastfed. I’ve been doing lots of nappy off time recently because of a nasty nappy rash and I’m mopping up little bits of poo every couple of minutes it seems like!!

Have you tried a washable swim nappy for bath time? And do a dunk and wash of babies bum last thing before getting out the bath?
