Change mat vs table sizes

I'm due my first baby in August and am having difficulties with change mats. We've been given 2 change tables (we only need 1 obviously). One is a mamas and papas and the part that would house the change mat is 70.5cm X 45.5cm. The other us an idea sniglar and the dimensions are 68cm X 47cm. I can't find a change mat anywhere that fits either table. Even the IKEA ones are the wrong size for their own table! It seems ridiculous! Obviously I want the baby to be safe so not able to bump its head on the table itself if the change mat is too small or be in danger if the mat overlaps the edges. Has anyone got any advice or a solution to this conundrum? Perhaps I'm being thick about change mats are supposed to sit on a change table!

Mine never fitted perfectly, mat had one long side and 1 short side with space either side. Its useful to put nappies creams etc

modgepodge · 30/06/2019 19:23

My mat is a good few cm smaller than the top of the change table (both Ikea), never occurred to me it could be dangerous?! I use the space at the side to keep wipes and a top and tail bowl, plus clothes if I am changing her outfit.

We just use a mat on the floor, no table needed.

Just get one that is smaller. Push it to one end and use that as the head end. Use the space at the other end for nappies wipes etc.

Tbh you may find the table redundant after a while as it's easier to just keep the mat and nappies etc in the living room.

Thanks for the replies. I'm probably just being over-cautious! All the mats I can find are too big though rather than too small. Can you use a floor mat (the ones with wedges on either side but nothing at the thinner ends) on a change table? There are a couple of those that might fit.

Thats what i use. A mat that has 3 edges, i just out itvon my changing table. My changing table is on top of the chest of drawers

I really wouldn't stress about this. Just whack any old mat on the table. By Christmas it won't be safe to use them anyway. Once the baby starts moving around and rolling you'll be better off doing it on the floor rather than somewhere with such a drop!

We have a Mamas and Papas changing table and our changing mat is a Mamas and Papas one. It doesn't fit perfectly (bit on the small side) but like PPs have said we use the space to put the wipes etc.

Hi Keebo,

Did you find a mat to fit the ikea sniglar in the end? I was given one, but I'm having the same problem, they are all too big. How ridiculous! Confused

BertieBotts · 01/12/2019 21:29

This just annoys the crap out of me. I couldn't find one to fit the one we were given either. I wanted to give the bloody thing away and then I ended up going back to it when DS2 was about one because if I was at home alone when he'd done a poo I needed somewhere I could change him that he couldn't really crawl away and/or smear poo on all sorts of soft furnishings during his escape. He doesn't try to climb off because it's too high and there is only the wipe clean mat for him to mess up. I did get a second hand mat off a friend in a weird size that just about squeezed in in the end.

BertieBotts · 01/12/2019 21:31

Agree smaller is better/OK. Ours was squareish and at first I tried a standard floor type mat but it was too long and narrow, so hung off the end and left a gap whichever way around we did it.

Do you have this ikea product in the UK stores? As that seems to fit exactly to the ikea one.

If it doesn't load properly, try searching Vadra.
