Newborn feeding

Hi all, had a baby on Monday and in a blur of tiredness and trying to work out how to operate the baby!! Latest concern today is about feeding and google not giving me the answer!

Breast feeding has been a disaster - switched to formula on day three as both baby and I getting quite upset by it. Am now expressing but not enough to feed him with.

Is it possible to overfeed? Something I read said he should have 450-700ml per day at the moment, he's more like 850-900ml over a 24h period. We don't force him to finish bottles if he doesn't want to and watch for his feeding cues.

He was 9lb born if that makes a difference- so already a big boy!!

Hi, congratulations!

I recently asked a similar question as was also worried about how much my 3 week old is feeding. There are so many different guidelines for quantity but I was going with 150-200ml of formula per kg of bodyweight in 24 hours, think that would be just over 800ml for you?
Mine is having considerably more some days, but I was advised by the midwife that if he is not being sick then it's ok. Replies to my post also suggested to just go with it if he's hungry. I know some people say that you can overfeed with formula but my little one definitely knows when he's hungry and when he's had enough.
I'm definitely no expert and still trying to figure all this out too... But from what I've learned so far I think what you're doing is fine

Congratulations! Google ‘pace feeding’. It will give you some tips to avoid overfeeding, which is possible when using bottles. It can also help reduce wind.

Oh that's probably a more useful calculation @Ruby3105 - I couldn't find anything that correlated formula with body weight. We've realised tonight that he needs to be in a size 2 nappy not a size 1 nappy so suspect he's put on a bit of timber since he was weighed on Thursday. He sometimes has a little bit of sick but nothing major (or not yet anyway!)

It's all so hard worrying about doing the right thing!!

Thanks @TitusAndromedom will try that tomorrow...we haven't been giving him a whole bottle in one go but probably do make it very easy for him.

If it's regurgitation rather than actually sick then I think that's ok, I would agree with pace feeding too. I try and keep mine more upright for 20 mins or so after feeding to help keep the milk down. Sounds like he's quite a big chap so maybe just needs that little bit more at the moment. I know what it's like worrying about getting it all right! I found you get told so many different things (even by midwives, nurses etc.) that sometimes it's hard to know what to do. Trust your instincts too...
