2 year old constipation after potty training

Hi guys. I started potty training my little girl on 5th May, within days she was dry and doing poos fine on the loo and on the potty, at home and out and about with no issues. She then got constipated after being at nursery and had a solid poo which hurt her. This happened again last week and she was screaming in agony on Friday afternoon and eventually managed to get it out, then more came after it. Didn't go again until Sunday evening - was saying all day "my poo is hard mummy" when she did go, it was fine and didn't hurt her. It's now Wednesday night and she hasn't gone since Sunday.

At nursery last week she was screaming trying to go, they could see it (sorry to be graphic) but it wouldn't come out, they put a nappy on her and she was really upset and didn't want to even sit down because her bottom is sore.

I went to the pharmacy and he gave me and she has had her first dose that evening.

The next day (Thursday) I called docs and they told me to put her on Laxido which I did and then she started pushing and the poo got stuck half out and she was screaming in agony for an hour, she was shaking and sweating, it's eventually came out and was huge, hard and round! (Sorry tmi)

As soon as it was out she was fine, and went for another poo that afternoon at nursery in a nappy. She did another small poo on Friday but it's now Sunday and she hasn't been since.

I think she now has the fear to go, but she's on these light laxatives which doctor told me to continue for 5 days and it doesn't seem to be helping?

Going to phone doctor again in the morning as am so concerned about her. Please any advice x

I've just been through something similar with my 2.5 year old son. We nearly had potty training cracked, but then he must have had a poo that hurt him as he started withholding and that made it even more painful when he had to go. Felt so sorry for him, he'd be screaming in agony Sad

I went to my GP and she prescribes movicol, and it's honestly been great. You dissolve in water and it binds to water molecules and makes the poo have a high water content so it is a lot easier for them to pass. DS has been on it for a couple of weeks now and he's honestly a different child Smile . He was on 3 sachets a day, and have gone down to 2 now. Will cut them out completely soon and see how he goes.

My GP also recommended making him a smoothie evey day with fruits that help with constipation like apples, pears, oranges, kiwi, mango, pineapple etc. That works almost as good as the medicines for getting things moving!

Hope things improve soon OP! x
