Breast feeding, expressing then back to breast! Help me

Basically long story short, in the hospital my boy was breast fed but due to issues with tongue tie and latch I changed to expressed. This last week we have managed to get him back on the breast, which has been great and we are now at day 4 of breast feeding and he hasnt stopped eating all day! My boobs are killing me and they feel completely empty. I am worried hes not actually getting any milk because usually I can hear him gulping when he feeds but he hasnt as much today. He is showing all signs of being hungry all the time, and is 3 weeks old on monday!

I know its probably cluster feeding but does that last all day? He was the same for about an hour the last 2 days but then slept well afterwards, whereas today hes been awake pretty much from 4pm today, except a few naps on my boob, but he w wakes after about 5 minutes...

Not much help but my first baby did this- nearly 20 years ago! It will settle down, after he builds up your milk supply by cluster feeding Are you using a protective breasfeeding safe nipple cream such as Lansinoh? Otherwise you will continue to be sore.

Is he having lots of wet nappies?

It's hard to tell but your best ways of knowing he is getting enough are his number of wet and dirty nappies and his weight gain.
Go into your lactation nurses in the hospital
or your community nurse and get weight checked regularly for next few weeks if you are worried? It is most likely cluster feeding though, my baby had a slow start like yours and lived on the boob for the first few weeks.

My record for clusterfeeding was 10 hours..! Just boob to boob and back again with the occasional break to pee.

It’s totally normal at that age and is nature’s way of getting your supply up. I once read that breasts are a factory, not a warehouse so even if your boobs fill empty, you won’t “run out”.

Just stock up on snacks and find a good boxset! xx
