Baby had ice-cream. How do I protect against sugar damage?

My father-in-law gave my 3 month old baby ice-cream. I was not asked and was only found out afterwards.
Supposedly it was only a taste on his tongue. I made my feelings known and mother-in-law gave him a bolloking as well. I am so upset by this for many reasons but the main one I'm worried about is how to 'brush his teeth'. Obviously he hasn't got any yet but I know sugar can damage gums.
I don't have a baby toothbrush and as it's bank holiday I can't ask health visitor for advice so I'm reaching out to you. Does anyone have experience with this or know what I can do?

The problem with premature solids and sugar for a young baby isn't really about their gums, it's the impact on things like their immune system and how it can alter their gut biome/microbes.

Baby will be fine. You cannot stop grandparents spoiling your child. Their prerogative. Plus point is you can justify NOT buying sweets/chocolate/ice cream 'because that's your treat at grandparents'

JustHereforHarriet · 27/05/2019 00:27

Ah, this is ace.

My first newborn spent so much time having sucrose for meds and tests she was practically addicted.

Pretty sure yours will be okay.

Dd2's first solid food that she didn't point blank refuse was a chocolate button. Her second was a lick of ice cream.
Her teeth are fine.

But just in case I advise you walk round the house, holding the baby at precisely 17 minutes past two in the morning, three times saying backwards "Tooth fairy protect us from our grandparents" If you can get exactly the right pronunciation it works. Honest.

What is wrong with MN tonight? It seems to be full of people name changing to start stupid threads that they never return to

....and that’s different to every other bloody night these days how exactly?

Drives me batshit. God how I miss the old MN.

Vade · 27/05/2019 00:32

Thanks everyone, that's what I needed to hear. I feel much better now.
I was never going to attack baby with a toothbrush!

JustHereforHarriet · 27/05/2019 00:32

Name change fail?

Everyone is basically telling you that what you need is a nice cup of growthefuckup. You will laugh about this in a week or so. My DS got given a couple of drops of beer off the end of someone's finger when he was about 6 months old. He is now a thriving teenager.

TrixieFranklin · 27/05/2019 00:36

Definite name change fail there

WeedsAndMoss · 27/05/2019 00:57

Baby will be fine. I wouldn't have been happy either. Do you know that neonatal units use sucrose to help babies before procedures, I think it helps calm them or something.

Isatis · 27/05/2019 01:28

We have a photo of DD at 4 months old with her mouth, chin and nose covered in ice cream after she buried her face in an ice-cream cone. She naturally licked a lot of it off. 16 years later, her teeth are absolutely fine.

Di11y · 27/05/2019 07:09

baby will be fine but i can see you have high anxiety. rubbing gums with damp cloth would have been enough.

Upzadaizy · 27/05/2019 08:23

But seriously, @Mdavis27 are you OK? You sound worryingly anxious. Overwhelming anxiety will do more harm to your baby than a bit of sugar. Most foods - including mammalian milk - contains a sugar form - remember it’s called lactose!

SinkGirl · 27/05/2019 08:26

My son needed 12-24 heel pricks per day for weeks on end in nicu. They often gave him sucrose. He was only 3.5lb at the time. I think your baby will survive.

Pommes · 27/05/2019 08:28

Oh, OP, I'm with you. I was beyond horrified when a dearly beloved relative gave my 3 month old chocolate sauce. His first taste of anything other than milk. Chocolate sauce!? I was so cross. The relative is no longer with us and it is one of my strongest, fondest memories of her. Your baby will be absolutely fine and you will look back on this and laugh.

SallyWD · 27/05/2019 08:41

Blimey, calm down!!

Conks · 27/05/2019 08:54

This can’t be real

SoupDragon · 27/05/2019 08:59

There is sugar in breast and formula milk so your baby will have had sugar before.

This. Compared to a full feed, a taste of ice cream is negligible.

Motherof3feminists · 27/05/2019 09:06

Check your baby into a Betty Ford clinic immediately.

Another one to add to the most batshit thread ever.

No one can be that stupid surely?

differentnameforthis · 27/05/2019 09:18

Sugar won't damage his gums.

brokenpromisesorlies · 27/05/2019 09:28

Wow Confused

rainbowstardrops · 27/05/2019 09:32

Are you asking us how to brush invisible teeth?

😂😂😂

TheLastNigel · 27/05/2019 09:36

Oh come on. We all have silly panicky moments over our perfect first babies dont we?
I clearly remember calling my sister at about 11 at night to ask if we should sterilise our steriliser with Milton before we used it Grin
The baby will be fine OP and so will you...

calpop · 27/05/2019 09:53

yep, all been there with our PFBs 😁
