Mixing breast milk with cow's milk

My 9mo has a bottle of expressed milk before bed but I'm now struggling to produce a consistent amount of milk as my supply has dropped ( x4 BF a day and no night feeds). I am wondering whether to top it up with a couple of oz of cow's milk. I know all the advice says not to give it before 1 but I gather that advice is in relation to it being their every feed, not as a small supplement. He has 3 good meals and 2 snacks too. Thanks

Cow milk should not be given as a drink until 12 months and you are quiet far off that yet.

Do you want to continue bf? Past a year or so? I wouldn't add cows milk at this age no.

Why not just add a bit of formula rather than cows milk?

Chachaslider · 18/05/2019 09:03

As far as I know it's just about not relying on cows milk for nutrition before 1 not that uts harmful. If they eat well and still take plenty breastfeeds I would. But maybe check with health visitor.

The advice is not to give except when it’s in something else, so they’d be realistically getting much less than 2oz at a time within a food. If you need to top up then either up your pumping to get your supply level back or introduce formula perhaps.

I've been asking my HV a simular question for a while now. I first asked whether it's worth introducing formula at 9 months. Answer was no, food and water is fine...then I just get wishy washy answers to should I introduce cows milk early, etc. I got told the amount of milk they need at her age (forgotten as I breastfeed so irrilavent. On a side note, I thought my supply was going down, stopped expressing at work, felt uncomfortable for the first time in months yesterday and when I got home expressed immediately after feeding (she didn't take long) and got 60ml! So it does fluctuate.

Thanks everyone. I am planning to feed until he's one and don't really want to introduce formula at this stage. I will contact the HV. He struggles to drink any water at the moment so would it be the worst thing in the world to top it up with the water he doesn't drink in the day? Trying to cut out night feeds so want him to have as much before bed as poss. Thanks
