What did you do when your child turned 1?

FTM here and my DS is also the first grandchild for both my mum and MIL.

My family seem to be assuming that we'll be throwing DS a party. In some ways, I think it'll be nice to do that. But on the other hand, bringing my family together with DHs brings out the worst anxiety in me. Have gotten away with only having to endure it for the wedding. They got along fine but my family is a little rough around the edges and I get so embarrassed. I also think it's not really necessary for DS as he will just be 1. I'd rather just do something as a three (me, DH and DS). It'll be cheaper and I'd enjoy it way more.

What did you do when your child(ren) turned 1?

I had a party, but it was a grownup sort of party with toddlers present. Kiddo's birthday was an excuse to talk to other adults and eat cake. I wouldn't have a party of people I wouldn't enjoy being around.

We had a day out to the zoo on his actual birthday, but had a messy play party the weekend after for the kids we met on maternity leave. We didn't really do anything with both families for it. We did for his recent 2nd birthday though.

For my son we had the grandparents over for a meal. For my daughter we asked a few little kids from post natal group - about six of them in all. So cute she’d never seen cake before!
If it stresses you out just say as baby’s just one you’re not doing anything special. But pleased don’t feel embarrassed about your family! You will have to get them together on some occasions eventually.
