Knickers on top of nappy or not?

Looking for summer clothes for DD and would like to buy her some skirts and dresses.....my question is do I need to put pants on over over her nappy? If so frilly pants or just knickers?? She's 24 months. Doesn't seem right having a nappy on showConfused

I put knickers on top of nappy if she’s wearing a summer dress. Nappy always looks a bit weird to me.

PencereTencere · 13/05/2019 20:43

I don't. I don't understand the knickers thing at all - it just seems unnecessary to me.

Hollowvictory · 13/05/2019 20:44

I too put pants on top. Nappies are not very nice things to see.

I'm going to get some knickers for the summer I think. DD is 21 months and went without knickers a few weeks ago when we had that bit of sun but it got grubby and a bit saggy before it needed changing which looked awful.

MamaMilkMachine · 13/05/2019 20:58

Thanks ladies, I think I will get some little knickers for her. Grubby and saggy is never a good look Grin

Wouldn’t you need to buy enormous knickers to go over a nappy? And it will still show round the edges. Personally rather than pants I’d get two or three pairs of basic jersey shorts or cropped leggings and put those under the dresses.

PerpetualStudent · 13/05/2019 21:02

Swap to reusable nappies! Can get super cute designs and they don’t sag like disposables

Divgirl2 · 13/05/2019 21:03

Just get thin shorts (pyjama shorts would work).

NataliaOsipova · 13/05/2019 21:06

I always used nappy pants over the top - looks a lot nicer. Mothercare/John Lewis used to sell them in packs of 2 or 3.

paintwater · 13/05/2019 21:09

I second the comment about cloth nappies! Super cute and so much better for the planet too, what with disposables being single use plastics. If you’re determined to use disposables then I think little cotton shorts or bloomers are cute, knickers surely wouldn’t cover the nappy properly and would look a bit silly.

owlofathena · 13/05/2019 21:20

When wearing disposables under a dress I put a pair of frilly nappy pants on (m&s 0-3 month ones still fit my 18 month old so they do come up quite big) but most of the time she is in cloth nappies so I don't bother as they look nice anyway

Orangedaisy · 13/05/2019 21:25

I find without pants the nappy ends up wonky. So it’s practicality rather than looks. My dd is over 2 now and still in 6-12 month nappy pants. She also loves them as she thinks they are real pants like her sister’s.

freshasthebrightbluesky · 13/05/2019 21:25

I never did - just more stuff to clean when they shart all over their clothes.

MamaMilkMachine · 13/05/2019 21:31

How do cloth nappies work at nursery?? Do they just put them in a nappy bag for you to take home and wash?

If I ever have a daughter I will 100%. And my mum did with my sister.

eurochick · 13/05/2019 21:38

Toddler dresses often come with matching nappy covers. We used these. They help keep the nappy in place as well as looking nicer than a bare nappy.

drspouse · 13/05/2019 21:42

The nursery puts them in a wet bag - it goes straight in the washing machine.
Extra plastic bags are not necessary, in fact it's really annoying when they use them as you then have to handle the dirty nappies.

PerpetualStudent · 14/05/2019 10:17

Yeah, I just send a wet bag in with the nappies and pick it up at the end of the day. If your nursery hasn’t had a child with them before might be worth giving them a little demo, but mine were really on board with it.

Emmabryant123 · 14/05/2019 11:50

I never bothered
Just used pull ups if wearing a dress

firawla · 14/05/2019 17:36

Either knickers or I still use the popper vests underneath.

insancerre · 14/05/2019 17:43

If you are sending her to nursery then please don't put knickers on over her nappy
It's such a pain when changing so many nappies to have to deal with unnecessary layers

InterestingShipNames · 14/05/2019 17:47

Only if they’re not wearing a vest with poppers at the crotch and the baby is a bum shuffler. Otherwise I wouldn’t bother.
