How to start potty training

My dd is almost 26 months and is ready for potty training. She tells me when she needs to go and when she has done a poop. Just wondering how you went about starting to train? So far I've got a potty for her but she doesn't seem keen on using it. Any tips?

Get the Oh crap book and read it. Ignore the stuff about nappy free over night, I think that’s crazy.

If they go to childcare then tell them in advance what you are doing. Make sure they have pull up and down own clothes. Take them with you to the Loo. Say ‘pants down, sit down’ and ‘stand up, pants up’ everything. Let them see you poo and the tell them poo can be tricky and take a little bit of time to come out.

Basically block out some time, bank holiday weekends are good time to start if you work, say no more nappies for the day time. Spend the first few days with them naked at least from the waist down. Watch them like a hawk and when the wee pick them up and put them on the potty and say we wee on the potty now. When they crack weeing on the potty at home you can put them in clothes (no underwear for 6 weeks) and go for short trips out but be naked in the house if easier.

Take the potty out with you, or portable potty or toilet seat if they are comfy with the toilet. Get maternity pads or puppy pads to put on car seats/buggies before they sit down.

Agree with the above.

We cracked it with 'Oh Crap!' really really quickly at 25 months.

I was recommended Oh Crap and I'll always recommend it. DD trained at 22mo and DS at 27mo.

I took DS to our touring caravan, made sure we had loads of food, magazines & books to read, lots of dvd's to watch, put DS in pants & cracked on, it was easy to whizz him to the toilet & had a potty in the awning, cracked it in under 5 days.

Thanks everyone. I've just bough oh crap off amazon and will start next week. Plus I'll let her nursery know as well.
