At what age should you/did you stop wiping your child's bottom? Still wiping here and DS is just turned 5...

you can start at any age, some people start when they toilet train (so straight away) and some wait a while. if you want to start then this link is helpful to read x

I've started this recently with my 4.5 year old. It's really hard. Sometimes there is nothing to wipe and sometimes he smears it down his legs. It's hard to explain it won't be the exact same process every time. I'm desperately trying to crack this before school in September though. I can't say I found that link very helpful unfortunately. It's the actual wiping bit that my DS is finding so hard.

In time for them to go to school. With the understanding that they might not always be perfect.

DS was toilet trained at 2.5 and toileting independently a few months later. He started attempting to do it himself at 2.5 with some assistance or a quick check.

My dd is nearly 4 and can wipe properly for the most part. She still asks me to check now and then but she's been practicing since turning 3.

I'm in the same boat OP! Those who have managed it - how did you do it?!

TheSunIsShining19 · 28/04/2019 16:37

I'm interested in this as well..my 3 year old has been toilet trained since about 18 months - 2..but still insists I have to wipe his bottom..every time I try and get him to do it, I just get 'no mummy do it pleaseeeee' tried refusing and he will just sit and wait 😂

CocoLoco87 · 28/04/2019 16:38

4.5 he's been doing it himself for a few weeks and he gets a Smartie every time (If he remembers to ask for one). Soon we will phase out the Smarties!

sleepismysuperpower1 · 28/04/2019 17:10

@louise987 the link i put above basically covers all the steps. my friend put a pantyliner in her kids pants until she was sure they could wipe reliably so the pants didn't get stained.

We taught to wipe with three pieces of paper, three times. (So nine pieces of paper in total). Haven’t had any skid mark disasters yet! We only taught him just before school though.
