So I've banned YouTube in my house . My sons are 8 and 5 and were so addicted to it , just constantly watching people play mine craft etc it drove me crazy !! Also with the whole MOMO thing I just don't know what they are watching anymore 🤷‍♀️ anyway do you think I'm being unreasonable to ban it completely ? Anyone els done that ?? My son says it's unfair as all his friends watch it , but he has a highly addictive personally and gets hooked very easily

I have. And I don't regret it. DS is 6 and the level of addiction to watching the most inane shit I've ever known was ludicrous. It caused ridiculous tantrums whenever he was asked to stop watching to do something else. However, he goes and watches it at his friends house instead.

PITA but at least he's not watching it on demand all the live long day at home!

BettysLeftTentacle · 13/04/2019 21:58

No, YANBU. We have no unsupervised YouTube (eldest is 6). I just can’t control what she’s watching enough to be at ease with it. It’s far too easy to access things she shouldn’t by accident and I wouldn’t be able to do a thing about it. So if there’s something in particular she wants to look up, we do it together so I can step in if anything dodgy appears. I don’t allow the inane shite (unboxing, toy reviews etc etc) there’s just no need when she has access to the BBC iPlayer, Netflix and DisneyLife. Plenty of crap to be found there.

We've banned it in our house too. Was a hard first week, but they've got over it now and have seen a massive improvement in their mood/behaviour. They don't even talk about it anymore!

Banned here too for the youngest two, the teen is allowed, but I can’t sit with both youngest and keep an eye on everything they watch so seemed like the easiest option for now.

drspouse · 13/04/2019 22:12

Mine are 4 and 7 and they can watch Kids YouTube, I'd never let them watch the regular one.

EvilTwins · 13/04/2019 22:13

I’ve also banned it. DTDs are 12. They can’t access it on their phones or laptops. We banned it about a year ago because it was sucking up too much of their time. They had phones for their 11th birthday and laptops the Christmas after they started secondary school so it wasn’t an issue before then. They were pissed of for about a week but then got over it.

I have the youtube kids app but set so that only parental approved content is on there. I have about 25 videos that I've watched and know are safe, and that's all my boy can access.

TigerQuoll · 14/04/2019 01:41

Momo was a hoax.

dontquit · 14/04/2019 01:45

I Deleted app from my phone with the Momo scare. Realise it was prob a hoax but still glad to be rid. My dd 5 was addicted to it and watching rubbish. She watches cartoons on Netflix now occasionally and behavior is much better.

BettysLeftTentacle · 14/04/2019 08:30

It doesn’t matter if the Momo thing was a hoax Tiger. It proved the point that perhaps, young children shouldn’t have unsupervised access to something as big and publically controlled, as YouTube. As far as Youtube kids goes, even I’ve found inappropriate content on there. Unless you can watch everything your DC is watching and approve it, as a PP has done, then you can’t have enough control over the situation to keep your children safe. To be honest, with so much appropriate content out there that can be safely accessed through streaming services and the like, is there any point?

Helenj1977 · 14/04/2019 11:31

I've banned it! Dds 10 and 8 aren't happy but I don't care! You can't supervise everything they watch and you don't know what they'll see.

Wineloffa · 14/04/2019 11:34

I’ve banned it too!! My 9 year old is not allowed on it all anymore. I couldn’t guarantee his safety on it.

SaintEyning · 14/04/2019 11:36

I did exactly the same for the same reason. My head was melting listening to the drivel of people playing games. TalkTalk allow you to block specific sites so I did just that. If I want to watch a YouTube vid for whatever reason I do it on my 4G now. Peace is restored.

ritzbiscuits · 12/06/2019 14:47

My 5 year old doesn't really know what it is, other than watching a few Hot Wheels videos with his Dad. It's addictive and full of crap content, just seems like a massive brain drain to me.

Will consider it as and when I need to when he's older, but enjoying the peace while it lasts!

DoraleeRhodes · 12/06/2019 20:41

I banned it. I had a false sense of security with the kids app but since the momo thing (hoax or not) I realised it really wasn’t safe.
