Sleep train... How/when

I'm wondering which sleep training technique you used, age of your baby and how long it took to make a difference.
I'm trying to get baby to settle and go to sleep himself.

Here is my story/ reason for asking

I have ds2 who is nearly 8 months we recently broke feeding to sleep by rocking to sleep as going straight into bed didn't work.
Rocking is starting to stop working, not to mention ds is getting heavy and it's getting warmer, we're starting to slip back into feeding to sleep. When rocking he has started fighting me.

My dh often works away so bedtime mostly falls to me, ds1 is 24mths old so I have to wait til ds1 is in bed to then start putting ds2 down because it takes awhile and can't leave ds1 unattended in the sitting room.

This means often ds1 is put to before before he is ready because ds2 is tired.

I usually put ds2 into bed at start of nap/bedtime but he will cry in less than a minute and take a while to settle when lifted. Thin walls mean ds2's crying usually sets of ds1 crying so I've got stuck in a rut.

I need some ideas of what technique and how long I should expect it to take to change so I can start when dh is home and he can keep ds1 up later.

With dd1 I did controlled crying when she was 9m. Thankfully it worked really quickly as I found it really tough.

Made sure she'd had a good feed, then put her down awake and sat for 1m. Left the room for 2m, returned and sat for 1m, left again for 4, then 8 then 12, then she was asleep. I did that twice more during the course of the night. 2nd night was similar. Third night she only woke once, 4th she slept through.

DD2 is 10m, I tried with her 2m ago but it's been much tougher. She has eczema which she goes crazy at so I tried bit failed. I need to try again though. Shes woke me constantly even though we're co sleeping and I've been awake since 4 and crying I'm so tired.
