Sons tummy problems

My ds7 has always had issues with number twos (sorry for tmi). As a toddler he would go days, sometimes up to a week without going for a poo and when he eventually went it always a humongous thing that would take him ages to pass....so sorry 🙈

This has improved as he got older. He started going more regularly but still has weeks where he just won't go. I try to explain why it's important but he just says 'I can't help it if I don't need to go'. I feel like it's now habit rather than poor diet or health related as he eats well and never seems particularly uncomfortable or unwell with it. But seriously his mammoth poos are a nightmare especially if he goes when we are somewhere public or at someone's house.

Is there anything I can do? Seen doctors before and been prescribed the usual lactulose etc but it's never made much difference. We're now on day 6 and he's going to a party tonight and I'm genuinely worried what will happen if his bowels unleash at the hosts home!
