Accidentally put too much water in formula! Worried

Hi all.

DD is 10 days old and formula fed. Today DH accidentally put 3 scoops of powder in a 4oz bottle when he should've put four. Thankfully we realised his error before she finished the bottle and she only drank about an ounce maximum. We then remade her bottle with the correct amount.

I'm a first time mum and terrified this may harm her/make her ill! Sad

It wont hurt at all

HappyMama01 · 24/03/2019 18:04

Done this a few times when you're sleep deprived and get distracted/forgetful. It's not the end of the world.

QuestionableMouse · 24/03/2019 18:05

She'll be fine. 😀

I really wouldn’t worry at all, she had a small amount of diluted formula- she’ll be fine.

YouSayRisottoIsayRisotto · 24/03/2019 18:05

No worries at all. Its fine. Its the same as if you gave her a bit of water. Wouldn't hurt her eveb slightly. The only reason not to is that you want them to not fill up on water instead of nutrient dense formula. But one feed is no worry at all.

PrawnOfCreation · 24/03/2019 18:05

She won't be ill. You've noticed so quickly and fixed it I doubt she'll even feel even a little hungrier.

Sounds like you and DH are doing a great job, well on the ball, spotting it so quickly.

Counting to 7 at 3am is one of the hardest things I've ever done 😂

polkadotpixie · 24/03/2019 18:05

In my sleep deprived state I did this approximately 257885421 times. DS has lived to tell the tale

It's not the best thing to do but she'll be fine

LL83 · 24/03/2019 18:06

If you did this regularly the baby would not be getting enough nutrients/calories if you put in too little. For one bottle it will be fine. Baby might be hungrier for next bottle a little sooner than usual. Try not to worry.

emmagrace96 · 24/03/2019 18:06

your little girl will be fine, just keep an eye on her and try not to make the the mistake again, I've done it once or twice or forgotten how many scoops I've put in and had to pour it out and do it again 🤦🏻‍♀️ if you did this for every feed it would make her ill but one by accident, and if you keep a eye on her should do her no harm x

DarkDarkNight · 24/03/2019 18:06

Don’t worry yourself. It was one bottle, in the grand scheme of things a slightly diluted bottle will do no harm at all.

It really is!

YouSayRisottoIsayRisotto · 24/03/2019 18:07

The amount of shit dh and I worried about with first dc that I wouldn't even blink at now. Poor you op. You forget how hard it is at first and how strictly you worry about the instructions.

PhalangeReginaPhalange · 24/03/2019 18:09

Totally fine, we did this a few times with the prep machine when LO was on 3oz but the lowest setting was 4oz. No harm done at all plus 1oz water isn’t harmful once in a while.

As PP said it’s more if it’s every feed. We were actually recommended by the gp to put 1oz extra water in to help with constipation- not saying this is recommended at all but just highlights how it can’t be too bad.

YouSayRisottoIsayRisotto · 24/03/2019 18:09

Basically you wouldn't freak out if she didnt finish one bottle would you? Thats what happened. She had slightly less powder.

RebeccaCloud9 · 24/03/2019 18:09

Ah, it's totally fine, don't worry. This will definitely be one of the things you laugh about together when she's older.

GetStrongKeepFighting · 24/03/2019 18:10

Put the powder into a pot so that if you do lose count you can tip it back into the tub, or another bowl if you prefer, and then count again.

Mumshappy · 24/03/2019 18:15

i think ive done this countless times. Dont worry at all.

Helenj1977 · 27/03/2019 07:19

I've got formula pots and keep the sections full all day. 7oz is a lot to keep count of like others have said!!

I wash the pot and sterilise it every couple of days. Much easier then counting.

Extra water will do no harm at all. Extra powder can though x

AnneRussell · 17/09/2020 08:27

Well these things happen and you should not worry too much. You are a person who will make mistakes and that is normal. You realized that you made a mistake and reacted quickly and you should be proud of that. I made a similar mistake when I my baby was eating the formula, but there were no problems. The best thing you can do for your baby is to use organic formulas because those are healthy and even when you make a mistake it is not a big problem. I buy the HiPP organic formula on anyorganics.com/12-hipp-formulas for really good price.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 17/09/2020 08:48

My boy is very nearly 6 months old and im pretty sure ive done this more times than I can count in my sleep deprived state.

Dont be scared about what it says on the tin about putting too much/little formula in. That only means if you're doing it all time.

Yesterdayforgotten · 17/09/2020 10:58

When dc2 was alittle younger I used pre measured formula pots and found these a godsend!

Caspianberg · 17/09/2020 13:26

It’s fine.

Basically too much powder to water makes them constipated and too little powder to water would lack calories and nutrients over time. But for the odd mistake no harm is done.
