Sensitive son

Hi all - my son will be 6 in July. At school he’s doing great and is at the levels that he should be at, so no issues there.
However, he is so sensitive! I feel like I’m walking on egg shells around him. For example, my niece (4) was here with her parents at the weekend. My mum and dad were also here. My niece walked past my dad and he picked her up and tickled her. She found it great fun! Not long later, my dad did the same to my son, he started to whinge and then cried about it!
He gets so grumpy and whingy if one of his friends says something to him that he thinks is ‘mean’. His best friend lost a tooth the other day, my son hasn’t lost any yet, and so his friend said he’s more grown up than my son. He’s just taking every little thing to heart.
He cannot take a joke, or people laughing at him if he does something silly. He gets in such a mood and he’s started raising his voice and becoming snappy. He also does this little growl and curls himself in a ball and turns away from anyone.
It’s just so frustrating and I don’t know why he’s like this. He’s been this way for about a year now. I know if he doesn’t get his own way he’s gonna go into this mood again.
I should say that he is generally a lovely little boy and very bright. He’s never been violent. Only the odd little push or something to a cousin, which gets dealt with as and when it happens.
Any advice would be great please 😊
