5 day old and breastfeeding

Had my second daughter 5 days ago and we are establishing breastfeeding. Previously fed my now 6yr old for 4 weeks before the second bout of mastitis won the battle!

With my first daughter it felt like she was constantly on the boob and never satisfied and barely slept.

My newborn is literally waking every 2hours, feeding for 30 minutes and chilling out before falling back to sleep for another 2 hours (and is sleeping for 3 hours at a time at night) I actually feel concerned at how little she seems to be feeding, she was weighed today and lost 5% of her birth weight which the midwife is happy with and is having plenty of wet and dirty nappies so I know I should be reassured at this but has anyone else felt like it is just too easy in the first few days?

(Promise, this is not a stealth boast post, I just think I was so prepared to hate the first 6 weeks like I did the last time that the fact we are both laid back and content at the moment is throwing me off. I am fully prepared for this to change and knowing my luck she will now be up for the next 10 hours cluster feeding!!)

Sounds totally normal. The first few months are a non stop feedathon and once you accept this the BF journey is a lot easier. Babies love being on a boob, hungry or not.

Good luck and keep it up!

I had two cluster feeders. Myvsecond was attached 24/7 for the first 6 weeks, I even ended up in intensive care when mastitis led to sepsis! I’ve just had my third and he doesn’t cluster feed at all! He feeds until he’s had his fill, pulls off then feeds again a couple of hours later. In the first couple of weeks he was even going 4-5 hour stretches at night (not so much now at 8 weeks Grin).
I was worried at first and didn’t think he could be getting enough but he had actually gained weight by his 5 day weigh in and had gone from the 50th centile to the 75th by 2 weeks old! He’s just an efficient feeder and I have good supply.

My two were completely different. First (7lbs) was on and off constantly, wouldn't sleep for long at a time and would wake up ravenous. Second (9lbs) will feed and then happily go 3-4hrs doing decent chunks of sleep. As long as they have plenty of wet and dirty nappies, and loosely follow a centile over time then I wouldn't worry.

That's reassuring thank you. Suppose it just goes to show all babies are different! My supply does seem to be much better so far this time around, I'm just finding it off not to be constantly feeding at the moment. I even purposely bought new box sets to binge watch!

It can be really helpful to attend a local breastfeeding support group just to see what's normal and hear other mums' experiences of breastfeeding. They're run by very knowledgeable staff and/or volunteer as well. Well done and keep it up Smile
