I have 3 years (6 and 3) between mine and they absolutely adore each other! Though they do fight occasionally and the older one doesn't always listen to the younger. When they are getting on it's so lovely to watch.

Teddyreddy · 04/03/2019 19:27

21 months and they play together almost all the time (aged 4 and 2 and a bit). They can wind each other up sometimes though, particularly when both tired.

Rockbird · 04/03/2019 19:28

Four years to the day and they hate each other's guts mostly. But then DD1 hates everyone's guts at the moment (preteen) Hmm

2.5 years exactly. They're 4 (almost) 5 and 2. They love playing together.

SinkGirl · 04/03/2019 19:33

Less than a minute, and no. They’re 2.5, and have ASD and they don’t interact at all, which makes me really sad. Hopefully they will!

sunshineandshowers21 · 04/03/2019 19:36

there’s six years between my two boys - 5 and 11 - and it’s the luck of the draw whether they will play nicely or wind each other up to the point of arguing. they also have a four month old sister who they both adore and they both like to sit and cuddle her or wave toys around in front of her.

Ridingthegravytrain · 04/03/2019 19:38

18 months (5 and 6 just now) and yes they play lots but also fight lots. There is a lot of competition. I do wish I’d left it linger as I see friends with gapsnif a few years and the kids seem to get on better as they are at different life stages so the competition is not there

Popskipiekin · 04/03/2019 19:42

2.3 years, 4 & 2 right now. They play beautifully outside when they can tear around after each other, and the older loves to make the younger laugh. Indoors when competing with toys is a bit (a lot!) harder and most of the time the best we achieve is playing alongside each other, not actually together.

Bunnybigears · 04/03/2019 19:42

Almost exactly 3 years (birthdays in the same week) they are now 11 and 8 and have always played great with each other. Even now my 11 year old is at secondary school he still has loads of time for his brother.

notacooldad · 04/03/2019 19:44

My 2 have 3 years 2 months between then. As kids they didnt get on at all and they were a pain in the ass! Even as teenagers they werent great.
However when the chips were down they rallied round after each other.
Last year Ds2 had a serious incident in a night club. Ds 1 was there separately and handled the situation taking care if his brother. Informing us, sorting out the hospital stuff until we took over and wanted to be updated.
Later on in the year Ds w was involved in a blow out. He phoned his brother who jumped in the car and drove 75 miles to help sort it out before we found out about .
I know my work is done wit them two now! They go out for a pint together and also go out as a foursome with the girlfriends.
They are nearly 19 and 22.

HoHoHolyCow · 04/03/2019 20:02

2 years 10 months.
They are 9 and 6 now and get on brilliantly, they love playing together.
It did take a while to get to this point though. They squabbled a fair bit when they were younger.

greensnail · 04/03/2019 20:14

17 month gap (currently aged 8 and 10). They play together a lot including most playtimes at school, they are usually playing together when I pick them up from after school club. They have very different personalities but seem to balance each other out well.

jennymac31 · 04/03/2019 20:17

4 years between eldest daughter and youngest son (age 6 and age 2). Both get on well at the moment but I'm sure that will change in a few years time.

Two2tango · 04/03/2019 20:18

20 months and they love playing together most of the time. They can also be each other's worst enemy though and the youngest is fiercely competitive. They're 7 and 5.

Auntiepatricia · 04/03/2019 20:18

19mths, 14mths, 25mths. They are either playing together or fighting together. Either way they are together.

Fizzforfun · 04/03/2019 20:21

20 months, played together, fought like cat & dog, now in their 20s best of friends

CailleachBheurh · 04/03/2019 20:23

It's interesting that most people seem to have a 2-3 year gap.

Ideally I'd like to have as small a gap as we can practically manage but I'm certain that if we end up going to have so large a gap that they're unlikely to play together then I'd rather just have the one.

My first two have a 16 month gap & played well together most of the time. They are 24 & 25 now & still best friends.

Feelingfullandreadytoclean · 04/03/2019 20:30

15 months between DD1 and DS and then 2.5 years between DS and DD2.

3 children in under 4 years was bloody hard work and still is sometimes but they all get on well and there is a lot of love between them all.

I find the dynamics change regularly between them all. DD1 and DS are very close and have strong bond but they can also over do it and need time apart. DD1 and DD2 get on well and DD1 can be very nurturing towards DD2. DS and DD2 also get on well and have a very loving relationship.

They can also fight like cat and dog of over tired or over stimulated, which is easily done with close age gaps.

CouldBeAnyoneReally · 04/03/2019 20:32

19mth gap and they’ve always played together so nicely, despite being chalk and cheese, that it makes me go squishy Blush Boy and girl. They’re 10 and 11 now and actual playing has dwindled but they still get on and play online games together instead sometimes.

I wouldn’t change a thing re age gap.

SpeedyBojangles · 04/03/2019 20:35

18 months and they are inseparable. I would recommend a small age gap. It's tough in the early days but worth it. Especially now I have a third DC (4 months old, 3.5 year age gap) and I'm not split three ways. The girls do everything together, they play together, play with the same toys, eat the same food at the same time, got to bed at the same time, go to school together etc...

Scotinoz · 04/03/2019 20:41

I've got 17mths between mine (currently 3 and 5), and they swing between playing fantastically together and ripping each other's eyes out 😬 There's a lot of competition. I'm hopeful it'll get better!

SallyWD · 04/03/2019 20:41

Two years and 3 months between mine they play together a lot and fight a lot!

CailleachBheurh · 04/03/2019 20:49

I'm glad so many people have small gaps and it's worked out well - it's very reassuring.

Tbh I'm kind of terrified though that we are going struggle to conceive next time and I'll end up having to choose between having a big gap and just having the one ( although I do know I'm lucky to have even one)

FedUpAndTired2018 · 04/03/2019 20:49

2 years 7 months between mine. The youngest is still only 14 months so pretty early days still, but oldest has struggled big time with gaining a sibling. I was desparate not to have 2 under 2 as I didn't think I'd be able to cope. To be honest though I had them both at home for the first 8 months until the eldest started preschool so I'm not sure that the 7 months I waited made much of a difference!

I definitely understand now why some people wait until the eldest is at school before having another. I definitely would have found that easier I think.

Ultimately though I think it's personality that counts more than age gap. There's no fixed rule that means any given age gap means closeness and harmony. It's luck of the draw.
