Probiotics for 1 year old

Hello,

Does anyone have any experience of giving your child probiotics and it having a positive effect? Also, can anyone recommend a brand.

My little boy is 1 and suffers terribly from constipation, he currently takes movicol daily and lactoluse occasionally but he still gets days where he is straining and sore. I've read a bit about giving probiotics and wonder if giving them might help his gut. I'm not sure if its relevant but he has a bad sweet tooth and he also loves carbs, so part of me wonders if he could do with something to balance him out.

Biogaia drops are fab.

Easily administered. Yes I believe they do help

We have the biogaia ones for our baby after the chiropractor recommended them. I just drip some into a bottle of expressed milk.

Both DD & DS have Biokult Infantis powder - in their morning drink or yoghurt. DD (4) has had it since about 4mths (half a sachet) & she's very healthy, but whether that is because of it or not, not sure. Certainly seems to have a good digestion & immune system.

My DS 14 months has exactly the same problems. I've also been considering probiotics as he has movicol daily. He used to have 2 sachets a day and 5ml of lactulose daily but since stopping breastfeeding and moving onto cows milk he seems to not need as much.
Would be really interested to know whether probiotics help

Is your son under the care and guidance of a paediatrician or similar for his constipation? It sounds like the dosage isn't working for him potentially and I would discuss changing it to see if it helps improve things.

My 2 year old son has been on Movicol and then Laxido for over a year now and it took ages to get the number of sachets right. We started on 4 a day but are now down to 1 where we've gotten things under control and 'moving'. Every child is different though.

Does he drink a lot of fluids daily without fail? That has a pretty quick impact on constipation returning for the odd day too. Something else to consider?

Before we started on the Movicol I gave my son the Biogaia drops but he had an allergic reaction to them. So I can't say if they helped as he only had one dose. He came up in massive hives all over his legs!

This website is very helpful for constipated kids. Have a look if you've never seen it before! www.thepoonurses.uk/
