Wheezing breathing???

I would really appreciate it if anyone has had a similar situation with their child. My son has a little cough and cold that seems to be going around. However when he breaths it sounds very wheezy and his breaths are fast. It's as if he's gasping for air in each breath. It sounds really scary. I made an appointment with our gp but when we went in my son had a meltdown (18 months) because he's afraid of being in the doctors. He was screaming and crying so bad the gp seemed very annoyed/frustrated. She "checked" him (he was moving so much and crying it seemed as if she was just trying to get us out.) she checked his temp and said he's fine looks like a cold. However when we got home the breathing got worse and sounds almost like a hiccup in each breath. Very fast/wheezy. We went into our walk in center since I still felt worried and the nurse tells us it's a 5 hour wait!!!!
We came back home. And now I'm with my son but I feel worried. Anyone experienced anything similar?

Also when he was 12 months he got kept in for a full week because his breathing was off and he wasn't getting enough oxygen. I told the gp this but she dismissed it. Sad
