Child exploitation on youtube

I've just seen a video a youtuber posted a couple of hours ago about some awful things he's found on youtube, where people are sharing inappropriate videos of kids and sexualised comments about them - things like putting timestamps of points in the videos where it focuses on their crotches.

What's particularly disturbing is that the videos can be found after only clicking a handful of suggested videos on things like yoga tutorials, and that they are are monitised (so companies adverts are being displayed on them)

Its horrible. I know that there's been things about this before in the news, but this is stuff I hadn't heard about before and I'm pretty well informed on internet news - its completely different to that Elsagate stuff that was reported on a while back.

I've messaged my friends about it, as I'm not on facebook - but I think that lots of people need to be aware of this. I've emailed the BBC and will be contacting the other news channels as well. I thought this would be a good place to make sure parents know about it.

The video is by a guy called Matt Watson and is titled "Youtube is Facilitating the Sexual Exploitation of Children, and it's Being Monetized" which pretty directly gets to the point.

The link is here:

Its was difficult to watch, but I think its important people hear about it. Apparently people are sharing it with a hashtag on twitter #wakeupyoutube, but I don't use it so I'm not sure what that means tbh.

Just as an update, it's started to be picked up by the media.

Forbes have done an article: www.forbes.com/sites/fruzsinaeordogh/2019/02/18/youtubes-related-video-algorithm-helpful-to-predators/#76832e584872

And it appears Purina have pulled their advertisements from Youtube while they raise the issue directly with the company

is this your channel?

WorriedUncle · 20/02/2019 16:22

No, it's not my channel - I'd rather die than be filmed talking about anything! Don't even like having my photo taken tbh!

I'm not associated with the maker either if you're wondering - I don't subscribe to youtubers or anything . I just stumbled across a link to it in a different forum and as I don't have any social media thought that it might be an idea to let people here know as only place I know that would get to a lot of parents

I don't typically get on bandwagons or promote things, but this really upset me
