Naughty step help

I have just started using naughty step as a last resort in discipline, my ds is 4 and has recently became very cheeky and rude etc
My question really is this evening after being on the naughty step we did the whole hug this is why you are here business and before his bum was even off the step he started with the attitude again so should I just keep him on the step for another go or give him a warning and let him go? There's no point in me doing it if I'm not doing it right

What was he in the step for?

With my DD (5) who also got the step at 4, sometimes it was lack of communication about why they are being naughty.

He told me he was going to get a kraken to come and eat me and started kicking me repeated this was because he wanted pringles and I said no, I warned him if he kept doing it he would go to the naughty step and he continued and added in punching...

Back in the step of it was me.

When he comes off more talking about why it's not nice, how it made you feel, how would he feel if you said it because he wasn't a good boy etc.

No Pringles though!

It's so hard isn't it. I think the first few times are the hardest.

I just felt it made no difference, I explained it all to him then straight away he was on about the bloody pringles - he never got any! It's like it's going in one ear and out the other, he's usually such a good boy! I should have had something in place before now tho! Too soft

I think sometimes it's perseverance.

Maybe once wasn't enough for him. Maybe he isn't getting the pringles anyway and that's enough for now.

Sometimes it wasn't for mine but then she's on it about 90% less now.

For her, she's quite sensitive and it was more about this is how you've made
Me feel, imagine if it was the other way round and getting her to understand about it that way.

Plus if it's new, it might not of made much difference now but once he associates it with being naughty it will improve.

He dosnt have a great deal of empathy so if I was to say that to him he just starts talking nonsense and walks away 🤣

For an alternative approach try ahaparenting.com Her take is that a child on the naughty step will be brooding about how mean you were to punish them, not about what they did wrong,and it is likely to worsen behaviour. Worth a read.
