Walking to school

So my 8 year old son came home today insisting that he should be able to walk to school alone. The school is not far, in fact I would be able to see him out the kitchen window until he was about 50 metres from the front gate. I am not keen on the idea at all and he has gone to bed very upset that he won't be walking to school tomorrow without me! Our neighbours children walk to the school without their parents with them but they are the year ahead of mine. (I think he's trying to get in with the big boys?) What do we think? Am I just worrying for nothing or would you guys insist on walking them until they are a bit older?

I would tell him that he can walk on his own in the Summer Term, and until then you'll also walk to school but not by his side.

I'd tell him exactly the same Smile

Not allowed until year 5 at DS's school.

That's a good idea I will see what he thinks of me walking a bit further behind him! I don't think the school has any rules about when they can but something I can check as it would be a good reason to give him as to why he can't! He's very grown up so I dont really have a good reason other than "your just not old enough" to him that is a silly reason!
