hi everybody,
I am not sure if this is right category for my topic so I do apologose if it isn't. I have 5yo daughter who I bring to school by car. After that I go to work which is 3 miles away in the Business Park so I do need a car. Although the school has the allocated small parking, they keep gates closed and do nt allow people park on it due to the safety. Outside of the school are very narrow streets nd double yellow line everywhere. The school head teacher keep sending letters to parents not to park on the double yellow line in front of the school gates, but honestly I do not know what else to do. Once I alsmot got a ticket for leaving my car outsude the school area on double yellow. Only by luck the parking guy let me off. Any advice? I see that couple of parents have keys as I presume they have a blue badge, but they do walk and I did not see anyone having any mobility problems.

Where do the other hundreds of parents park?

PolarBearDisguisedAsAPenguin · 01/02/2019 16:08

Can you walk to school and then back home to collect your car before heading to work, or else see if a childminder is available to drop your child at school?

rainflowerstar · 01/02/2019 16:09

Park the next street or two away and walk!

Can you park 5 minutes away in a more convenient road, then walk?

Anonanonanariston · 01/02/2019 16:14

Definitely park a 5 minute walk away. It's good for the kids. 'Park and stride' they call at at ours.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 01/02/2019 16:15

Clearly there is a parking option as there must be other parents parking.

Leave a little earlier and find a side street and walk a little.

Dimsumlosesum · 01/02/2019 16:15

We park a 5 min walk or so away and just walk in. Can you not do similar? A few parents also jog in from further away with the kids in a bike or scooter etc.

LyndaLaHughes · 01/02/2019 16:17

Why can't you park further away and walk? That's the norm in most schools I'm afraid.

KitKat1985 · 01/02/2019 16:19

You need to park a few mins away and then walk in.

P.S. Just because you "don't see any mobility problems" doesn't mean someone isn't entitled to a blue badge. Not all disabilities are visible.

TartedUpYard · 01/02/2019 16:22

The odd time I need to take the car, I park a significant distance away and walk. The same repeat offenders in our school put other kids at risk by parking on the zig-zags and double yellow lines. There is really no excuse for this laziness and/or selfishness.

xyzandabc · 01/02/2019 16:23

You park within walking distance somewhere else, where you can park safely. You do not park on double yellow lines. Within half a mile is great, within a mile still fine. Park half a mile towards your work, then it'll be a shorter drive after the drop off. A 5 yr old can do a mile no bother unless there are mobility issues you haven't mentioned.

pikosan · 01/02/2019 16:27

Thanks you all. I honestly do not know where all the other people park, I mostly see people walking with their kids and I presume they all leave nearby. The school opens the doors at 8.50. Even if I walk by that time and drop my LO then I have to walk back and drive through all the traffic. Which means I will never make it on time to work. We are moving house soon, I can see what a nightmare that's going to be.
KitKat1985, did not mean to offend anyone, no need to be defensive. I suppose I will go this weekend to see if there are any streets with no yellow parks, but I would presume they would be all taken in the morning..

You could be one of the parents at my school.. Just do what we all do and park further away and walk in
Don't park on the zigzags!
It's not hard really.. we all have to get our kids to school and go to work

caughtinanet · 01/02/2019 16:30

Double yellow lines apply whatever your circumstances, it's not OK to do it because you can't think of an alternative, you didn't think it was allowed did you?

Parents who think the rules of the road don't apply to the school run are a menace and a danger to children

Neverunderfed · 01/02/2019 16:30

It is highly unlikely that you are the only one in this boat, a lot of other parents will drive and/or walk. Perhaps speak with work and start later to facilitate walking or parking further away?

Have you spoken to other parents to see what they do? Unless they have a large car park most schools don't allow parents in, and obviously double yellows are a no go. So what do the others do?

pikosan · 01/02/2019 16:31

Sakeofpete, I do not park on zigzag. we dont have them. I park on nearby little street away from traffic, I dont block any driveways or busses. So I would appreciate if people stop judging without knowing any facts really. I heard some really good advices here thatnk you, but I do not accept when people start saying oh yes lazy why dont you.. anyway, thanks to all who managed to give advice without being judgemental.

Ask work if you can start later or use breakfast club. You have to accept that your journey needs to factor in parking and adjust accordingly.

pikosan · 01/02/2019 16:35

Believeitornot, I will try to talk to my Line Manager and see whether I can ajust my working hours. But that only going to work until we move, because then we will be 3 miles away from school. Mean time I will use advice to try to speak to other parents and explore the area.

Well, that sounds fine. If that is working well and you’re not on double yellows, why don’t you just carry on parking there?

pikosan · 01/02/2019 16:39

Holidayshopping, I did until I almost got a ticket..

I'm in a similar situation, school starts at 8.45 and I have to be at work at 9. If I can park close to school it's fine and I get to work on time, so I make sure we get there early enough to get a space. If I had to park further away it'd take me longer to walk back to the car and I'd be late for work. There's no breakfast club and no childminders at the school so those aren't an option for us.

KittenKaboodal · 01/02/2019 16:44

Are there any empty driveways? You could ask homeowner if you can rent their drive?

Wolfiefan · 01/02/2019 16:49

Don’t park illegally. Confused
What are you going to do when you live further away?
I park quite a way from school and walk. Or you could leave earlier to find a space closer. Or get a childminder to do the school run. Or use a breakfast club. Or get your child’s father to do some drop offs.
It’s not the school’s problem. And you can’t park on double yellows. HTH.

pikosan · 01/02/2019 16:51

Thank you for advice, KittenKaboodal. TheSnuffster, I am a bit relieved l am not alone in this.
