hi everybody,
I am not sure if this is right category for my topic so I do apologose if it isn't. I have 5yo daughter who I bring to school by car. After that I go to work which is 3 miles away in the Business Park so I do need a car. Although the school has the allocated small parking, they keep gates closed and do nt allow people park on it due to the safety. Outside of the school are very narrow streets nd double yellow line everywhere. The school head teacher keep sending letters to parents not to park on the double yellow line in front of the school gates, but honestly I do not know what else to do. Once I alsmot got a ticket for leaving my car outsude the school area on double yellow. Only by luck the parking guy let me off. Any advice? I see that couple of parents have keys as I presume they have a blue badge, but they do walk and I did not see anyone having any mobility problems.

caughtinanet, exactly. My work in near motorway, there is no cycle path there. There is a bus leaving 8.20 from the bus station and gets some people there. But most people are having cars, and others who have kids, their kids are old enough to travel themselves, or they have school clubs.

Posts like this are exactly why I love Mumsnet. You are responsible for a child but have to ask how to get the child into school without parking illegally???
Absolutely unbelievable

loadofcrap10, have a nice day.

It is a crunch point for many parents who have a tiny amount of time between drop off and starting work.

-Are there any other local parents who would drop off your Dc in return for you doing pick up, for example ?

  • is there a local childminder who does drop offs to the school?
  • Can either you or the Dc father (if around) ask for flexible working and start at 9.30?
  • Find somewhere further away and you and Dc use scooters between car (parked further away) and school, and back again for you?

For some of these could you advertise for help in tne school notice board?

And if the answer is ‘give up my job’ that is very hard for some families.

OnTheHop, ty. I will try everything and sort it somehow. Unfortunately, don't know my neighbours and we are moving soon again. So I will manage somehow.

jollygoose is right - friends who travel in from far away both had arrangements with people who lived near the school to park on their driveways

One paid £50 a term. The other from an elderly lady who she gave flowers/chocolates to once a term and went round for coffee

JumpOrBePushed · 01/02/2019 19:45

My DC’s school has a policy like the one shouldwestayorshouldwego describes.

Doors open at 8:45am, children can go to classrooms, get settled down, there’s typically some short morning activity set out for them to do.

Doors close at 9am. Register taken at, or shortly after 9am, and school day officially starts.

It does improve parking, as parents there at 8:45am sharp will usually be leaving parking spaces as later (but not officially late) parents arrive in cars.

dontforgettofloss · 01/02/2019 20:00

The last few primary schools my children have been to usually have an alternative place to park other than around the entrance to the school- eg, the local community centre, nearby car park.
The school should understand that not all parents can walk or cycle their children to school.

Just because someone has a blue badge means they have a disability - not necessarily a mobility problem - the badge could also belong to a child they are transporting with Autism or similar.

You have to suck it up, park further away and walk

llangennith · 01/02/2019 22:01

Apologies if it's been said but how about leaving home earlier so you have time to park and take your DD to school?
It's what thousands of us do.

LyndaLaHughes · 03/02/2019 12:33

The school should understand that not all parents can walk or cycle their children to school.

Of course schools understand this but how on earth can they be expected to magic up parking solutions? It's not their responsibility. Having the alternatives you have mentioned has been a matter of luck and not the norm in most areas. It is simply not an option at most schools. There is certainly no obligation for schools to provide parking for parents. There is a solution always- the simple one- park further away and walk.

pikosan · 03/02/2019 16:51

I have been to the area and looked at the roads. I found one, that potentially could be the one I can park on. It's not too far and I don't think it's going to be packed there. So thank you all for constructive comments the discussion is closed (unless of course you want to continue for your own amusement).
