Getting baby to eat lumpy food!

Hi everyone,

I hope you can help.
I started my son on purée food at 6 months, at 7 I started to introduce lumpier food.. he is now 8 months old and is still choking on 7 month old porridge !! I’m so worried as surely, soon he should start having finger foods and I just can’t imagine him chewing the food and swollowing without choking and throwing up, as I said he still does this with his porridge :( I’m trying to be consistent but nothing seems to be changing. He has two bottom teeth, will he start to chew better when he has more teeth? I’m just not sure what to do!! Thank you x

I would skip the purées and give him food to hold and feed himself, let him control it. Read into baby led weaning tbebthe difference between gagging and choking.

Two of mine had no teeth until gone one but they ate everything from 6 months old.

I think I’ll give that a go today. I am really worried about him choking though, I’ll keep my fingers crossed x thank you

Gradually make the food thicker and thicker so he has to push it around his mouth and chew. Give soft finger food like chunks of banana that slip down easily. He just needs to learn the difference. Many babies struggle with moving from puree to lumpy foods as they are expecting puree. Finger food takes away this expectation. He can chew perfectly well with the teeth in his gums. This is one of the disadvantages of later weaning. I am glad the guidelines will be changed soon back to 4 months. Think about foods like chunks of softly poached eating apple, soft carrot etc. Babies often like picking up peas once they have the finger-thumb apposition going

Thank you for your reply! I’m trying him on more finger foods today. Banana and toast is going down ok atm!

Is transferred to baby led weaning if it was me as babes learn to handle more textures through this and no spoon feeding 😙

The guidelines aren't changing back to 4 months either
